Ive been playing alot of these types of games and it really infuraites me when developers can't give your hero a voice. So my choice is..... The hero from Fable 2. Or the hero from Dark Cloud. Or the Agent from Crackdown.

I don't dislike them at all.
Some just characters just aren't meant to have a voice and an array of witty oneliners.

But if you can't speak, how can these people just assume you will go on this quest instead of, like in real life, getting creeped out that they're just staring at them intently

I would have to go with Gordon Freeman. It would work if they did some sort of isolationist metroidvania/deadspace thing, but instead people have "Conversations" with you, it doesn't work. Also the fact that there are no cutscenes, reflective surfaces, or legs when you look down means that he is quite possibly just a floating pair of hands, and the guy on the cover is nobody. Valve's writing didn't help either.

What are you talking about? They speak all the time.

"Darkspawn! Be Careful. Impossible. No. Think again. It can't be done. As you command."

I just wish they wouldn't break the fourth wall.

I vote the L block from Tetris.

Okay, fine. What I mean is I wish they would actually talk in conversations, not just spout 1-liners.

Agreed it would just be wierd if some of them talked and would make you feel disconected from the game.

Fable and Fable 2. I mean FFS in Fable 1 there are even scenes that have him mouthing words but he makes no sound, indicating that he was originally going to have a voice then they just went "screw it" and left him mute. I generally don't mind silent characters, but when you can clearly see the reason they are silent isn't a design mechanic and rather just laziness then that's what gets me cranky.

I liked the guy from Dark Cloud, he wore a kick ass poncho and so obviously had a link obsession what with all the ya, ya, yaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh! When he swung his sword

The Main Character of Persona 3 is a *****, the 'everything to everyone' is crappy, he sleeps his way into everyones heart, is their best friend, their rival and their lover all at the same time without saying a word, damn sod,

I don't mind mute protagonists in ego shooters as they concentrate on the action aspect.

But a silent protagonist in a game with a complex or well told storyline always seems displaced and feels very unnatural. No matter the genre.

They're all the same, but the ones that annoy me the most are :

Isaac Clarke. His lack of voice is so irritating that it almost ruins the game.

"Hey, Isaac, go and battle that giant-worm thing with your plasma cutter."

Isaac : "....."

"Isaac, go fetch my diner. It's on the other side of the alien-infested morgue."

Isaac : "...."

"S'up Isaac, I am your father."

Isaac : "...."

Are we supposed to feel attached to a chunk of rock?

Far Cry 2 protagonist. You have 8 characters to choose from. Obviously, you'll choose the one who seems the most interesting, e.g. Frank Bilders. Guess what? He gets taken off the game, because your character is silent throughout the whole story! It's pretty damn hilarious - your buddy is having a full conversation with you, while your character just stares at him. And you STILL manage to make friends and get contracts. I like how no one ever considers to ask why the merc in front of him doesn't say a word.

Gordon Freeman is both my favourite and least favourite silent protagonist. Favourite, because he somehow manages to make the player feel attached to him without any signs of personality, and least favourite, because the story would be much better, if he started to talk. What pisses me off the most is that he gets a "best game character" award when he has NO FUCKING PERSONALITY.

I won't even mention the COD protagonists, because they're just a bunch of disposable cameras with two arms and military training.
