Compared to most comments here, ive found gametrailers to have a good group of people- if you look in the right places, and i've got some very good advice on upgrading my computer from there.
Otherwise i cant say much about forums, i only really look at them when im system updating my PS3 or patching something.

I only go Gamespot, IGN, and, obviously The Escapist to slake my gaming thirst. The Escapist has by far the most untroll-like behaviour and seems to avoid the snotty name-calling and facetious comments on the others (although there are some pricks here who seem to think that correcting people on their typos makes them look clever. It doesn't.) I think when it comes to major what I'd call "commercial" games sites, it's much of a muchness.

All right, I'm going to go to gametrailer, gamespot, and gamebattles to find the stupidest posts possible.

Be back in a second...

I'm going to have to agree with GameBattles as well; it's the only forum I've really read (apart from here of course + WoW forums) that displayed such a consistent level of absolute stupidity, trolls and so on. The WoW forums aren't too bad, there are plenty of arguments but they're usually *slightly* coherent debates on class vs class balance, trolls not withstanding of course.

I'd say the Gametrailers forums. The content is awesome in my opinion, but the forums ... oh god the forums...

Sadly, it is my favorite game which has probably the most degenerative community around. It's called Endless Online, and it's basically 4chan with sprites. In huge contrast with The Escapist, the game is entirely unmoderated.

I dare you to read their forums.

Youtube (the gaming posters, or the posters who post on anything on youtube in fact).

Other than that, The Escapist.

Thought I would check out the Gametrailers general gaming discussion forum.

Thread: Forgettable Game

What game did you play but you forgot you played it because it wasnt that good or their was nothing special about it
I don't know, I must have forgotten.

Maybe I should check another part of the site, for some reason I want to watch the Sins of a Solar Empire review and see what the other users think of it.

You insensitive fag... I hope you get banned...
Zooming out makes you feel so big.
Oh, Gametrailers.

Yeah, I'll admit, I am picking on them for comic effect and it isn't like I'm that great and so on.

As far as I know, Youtube has no moderation at all and every video even slightly related to games turns into a giant flamewar.

Steam Forums are horrible. I'm not in the mood for "cool story bro" or "/10char" or the like.

The TF2 ones are the worst of all the steam forums.

This is the only true gaming community I've been part of, other than the Steam forums, and I only joined that something like a week a-

Wait, no. I was part of the WoW forums. I pretty much paid my account just so I could browse there. That lot whined quite a bit. Nerf this, buff that, the zombie event was stupid. Blah blah blah.

When the Shamans were nerfed once again the collective community of shamans broke the shaman subforum. It was great.

Whiners.

The Left 4 Dead 2 forums would like to challenge this statement.

Gamespot, and Gamebanshee. Gaaaaawd, it feels like a room of 2 million 12 year olds angsting and failing in every aspect of english class at once.

The Escapist is by far the most intellectual.. and sane. (Most of the time)

Is it a good thing or bad thing that that made me laugh my ass off? For five minutes straight?

I assume by "less intellectual" networks you actually mean networks with a higher proportion of... those people. I haven't been on many, but Gamespot/GameFAQs has been the worst I have seen to date.
