So I tried to play Left 4 Dead 2 today. Everything goes fine, I join a lobby, choose my survivor, etc. Then it loads. The load ends and I'm greeted to a black screen that flashes every now and again and audio of horrendously lagging sound effects (ie. half of a gunshot, over and over and over). I hit the windows button, go back to my desktop, and I am unable to close L4D2. I open task manager to end it. I confirm. It does nothing, so I have to restart my computer. My internet connection is fine (obviously) and the game worked perfectly a day ago. Since Steam Support is totally useless, I turn to the Escapist and ask, does ANYONE know wtf is going on and how I can fix it?

This happens to me a few times when playing Steam games -- mainly TF2 or GMod.

As far as I know, the game's just silently shooting itself in the face. (Not responding)

Works fine after the reboot.

Pro-tip: if something crashes, just cancel the process in Task Manager, don't bother to end the task.

Anyway, can't say I've ever had that - maybe you're just unlucky with servers or something. I'm pretty sure there's a "report a bug" option in the game's main menu, and all their stuff gets patched regularly, so if it's a problem on their end it should go pretty soon.

tried again. same thing happened. it also happened when I hit view credits. there's no way to report bugs (WTF VALVE) so I just have to wait for it to eventually be discovered by someone at Valve...

okay, after a bit of research, I found that a recent update on Wednesday "improved performance for a range of ATI graphics parts". since I keep getting a message that "display driver igfx has stopped working", I'm wondering if THIS isn't the cause. things are looking up, seeing as how Valve will probably update in the next few days or so
