If I had never played either of these games, but wanted to, which one would you suggest that I buy?

I prefere L4D's cast, but L4D2 is better in terms of content (eg melee, laser sights, 3 new infected).
The First one had a much better atmosphere, but the second one had a wider variety of weapons and zombies. Each are good depending one your mood. Do you want a riveting adventure? Or do you want a game focusing mainly on the action?
I think L4D NAILED the feel of a zombie survival horror movie, but some of the gameplay aspects are a little shallow. L4D2 fixed all that, but the rest of the game is kinda lacking in background depth. The characters all make me sad too. As awesome as Ellis is, he's WAY too happy to be in the middle of a zombie invasion.
you can get either one. I have both and to be honest with you I enjoy them both equally, and there's no real differences between the two. But if I had to choose, I would say the second one, only because I've had better experiences online with that one (and it has melee weapons which I love)
