So, since it's Halloween, I felt the need to watch some older horror movies.
- Night of The Living Dead (1990 remake)
- Dawn of The Dead (2004 film)

Both by George A. Romero. Needless to say, I'm a big fan of Mr Romero and he is the father of "zombie movies".

First, I watched NoTLD and immediately I saw something I had seen in Left 4 Dead & L4D2.
- Tom, the teenager with a southern accent, wearing a baseball cap. L4D2 - Ellis. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3252656640/nm0124834
- Ben, the African-American man, dressed in a suit and all that. L4D - Louis. http://www.necromaticmedia.com/images/zr_notld1990_02.jpg

Then, I watched DoTD and I saw a few more similarities.
- Officer Ken, the big bulky African-American cop. L4D2 - Coach. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm660052224/ch0002637
- The mall in which the movie takes place (most of the time) and the gun store keeper (Andy) opposite to it. L4D2 - The Mall & Whitaker's gun shop.
- The idea, planned by the survivors, to get to a boat and travel to an island. - L4D2, The Sacrifice.

I haven't seen any of Mr Romero's other movies in a long time, so I'm not sure if there's any more similarities.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of both Mr Romero and the L4D series, but, I can't help but feel that the creators of L4D paid an AWESOME tribute to the man who created the genre. Which is totally AWESOME.

So, what do you guys think?

You're pretty late to the party, but it's good to see that you made it eventually. Still, I see very little discussion value in this thread.
Let's discuss the ethics of hamsters instead then.

That's because I got L4D & L4D2 about a month ago. :p

Then why do you think you've discovered something original enough to merit a thread when the Left4Dead has been out for 2 years, and Left4Dead 2 has been out for 1?
Because I don't think everyone knows about this.
Because it's Halloween.

I apologise if you are somehow offended by me posting something you are already well aware of.

@AjimboB - Not all of us are aware of the things ActivatorX mentioned. I haven't played either of the Left For Dead games yet, and appreciate the heads-up about the nods to the movies. I'll be keeping an eye out for the things ActivatorX mentioned when I eventually upgrade my computer and get the games.

Let's just be a little more friendly and tolerant, and do a little less trolling. If this thread truly doesn't deserve to be here as you say, then you're just bumping it and helping keep it alive, rather than letting it die naturally.

Let me be one of the few that aren't assholes on this thread.

Yeah I've noticed and I have been disappointed at the lack of discussion about it on this site. How ironic.

Yeah, the left 4 dead games are chokkers with notions and tributes to all things zombie.

From Louis' Shaun inspired (and Ben from the remake) getup to the elevator in No Mercy that comes from floor 28 (like 28 days later) to the references to Dead Rising in The Passing and everything in between.

Because it's a damn fun game which improved upon everything the first made great as well as adding some new spice to the mix, plus it's a grand treat if you (like me) love a good co-op game.

I love the Half Life games as much as the next guy (i.e Half Life 2 is my favourite game of all time...and I once wrote an analysis on how Half Life 2 is a dystopian adaptation of the story of Moses and the Exodus) but Valve has made alot of other great games.

When did you get the right to say what threads can and can't be made?

Some of us have lives/jobs/etc. and don't watch tons of movies and might not get every vidya reference.

Its interesting because Half Life EP.3 will not be released for years and L4D is way more fun.

I'd like to point out the Shaun of the Dead tribute with the cricket bats. I mean really, how often would you see a cricket bat in the US? Especially in the deep South?

The shotgun from L4D and L4D2 is very similar to the shotgun used in DotD, the only difference being the color, but then, most standard pump actions bear a lot of resemblance. I haven't seen a lot of Romero movies, but I imaging the tributes are all over the place.

A lot of zombie games pay tribute to other zombie games or movies. I think it's actually part of what makes the genre so great. Part of the reason L4D and L4D2 did so well I think is because they don't take themselves too seriously. They don't pretend that the game isn't what it so obviously is: a great way to get together with buddies and kill and hour or two while making stupid jokes/puns. The only zombie game that I put up alongside of L4D and L4D2 in terms of just screwing around and killing zombies is Nazi Zombies on CoD: World at War. Nazi Zombies is a little different though, but it's still funny if you play with the right people.

I'm going to rent Shaun of The Dead right now, and watch it for myself.
Are you talking about the shotgun CJ had? The one that looks like a Combat shotty from L4D?
Indeed, L4D & L4D2 are masterpieces, and I've had dozens of hours of fun with both.

WHOAH!

Like...WHOAH!

Just...you...what?

You're a fan of zombie movies, and zombie games, and you haven't seen Shaun of the Dead yet? Wow. That is just...WHOAH!

Rent it, buy it, steal it from an old lady - it doesn't matter how you get it, so long as you see it as soon as possible! IMHO, it's the greatest zombie movie ever, but that might just be because I like comedy a lot more than I do horror.

I am trying so hard right now to come up with a pun for this. So hard. You don't even know.

I've got nothing :-(

Well, I used to be very busy with work and school, so I used to spend ALL my free time on games and only games (a certain mumorpuger, which I shall not name, in order to avoid the curse of it). :p
However, I took a break from school AND work, thus I have much more free time now, and I started watching movies again.
