Add me to the list of people who wholeheartedly recommend the series. Fun fact: When pitching ideas to Crystal Dynamics, Denis Dyack had Too Human in that list in addition to the Blood Omen concept. The idea is that old. I'd also say it's safe to start with Blood Omen 1, it's aged very well compared to most.

Definitely. Brilliant series.

Best start with the first one. You can get it on PSN now actually.

The series has probably my favourite game story of all time. I just love it. Nice and complex and intertwining with a lot of plot twists, revelations and cross-references.

Yes! Keep in mind there strong point is in Atmosphere as opposed to combat though!
Indeed, it's all about the story and atmosphere.

I couldn't necessarily say the gameplay of any of them particularly moved me... well, Soul Reaver was good, it was quite creative with the 2 different realms and all. That was nice and the combat was pretty fun. SR2 was definitely a bit lacking in comparison.

You could skip Blood Omen 2, it's kind of an irrelevant cluster**** that appears to retcon rather important elements of the plot that some people say is explainable due to alternate universes caused by time travel and... blah blah, it's a ****ing mess.

I dunno man, the guy that played the Elder God died a while back so unless they replace him (hard to do) I'm not sure where they're going to take the series.
But didn't
the Elder God pretty much get defeated presumably for good at the end of Defiance?
Nah not at all. Kain just beat up one part of the Elder God. EG has his eyes and tentacles all over Nosgoth and is supremely powerful. All Kain managed to do was piss him off and possibly trap one part of his very large and widespread "body" in the bottom of the shrine. EG is still very much alive and angry and ready for revenge at the end of Defiance.

I bought the soul reaver series (+defiance) on a steam sale a few days ago. I've never played them before so I can say this without being blinded by nostalgia: Get them. The first game's control scheme takes some getting used to and the game can get infuriatingly frustrating, especially when it makes you repeat difficult jumping puzzles ad infinitum (and sometimes huge chunks of a level if you as much as miss a step) and the combat system is broken beyond repair (you lose your only weapon after getting hit ONCE), but those issues are mostly fixed in the later games and it's still worth experiencing for the story and characters.

Gameplay wise, they haven't aged pretty well, especially SR2, as for the graphics, the aesthetics have held up remarkably well after so many years, the soundtrack is pretty awesome and I still can't quite get the story entirely.

So yeah, play them for the story and soak up on that atmosphere. And enjoy it's soundtrack:

I tried Soul Reaver 1 recently actually, it's a bit slow paced, but its a very cool game and doesn't hold your hand with the puzzles.

Also this, the soundtrack is great and eerie.

Oh ya... kinda semi-remember that...

Still, I didn't feel too bad at the end of Defiance. In the sense that... knowing LOK isn't exactly considered a AAA franchise and a proper ending wasn't a given... I think it tied up most things reasonably satisfactorily.

Looking on the bright side and trying not to be greedy is all ^_^

You know, Soul Reaver is ****in' weird in general. Pretty all out freaky and disturbing in a sense. Quite cool. One of those times where the primitive 3D graphics and pixellated textures seem to add to the weirndess. I found a lot of PS1 games a bit freaky that way... I think 5th gen graphics were in some kind of "uncanny valley" of graphical quality. Well, more like freaky valley, in that really simple 3D isn't disturbing, and PS2 pretty much lost that characteristic due to the smoothness and improvement of texture clarity, but PS1 looked weird.

For another example, Emerald Weapon in FFVII always freaked me out. If it had been done in PS3-era graphics, I really don't think it would have. Things like draw-distance really made some games freaky.

Yeah I feel. There was a sequel planned but after Defiance's poor sales I think they shelved it. Then Tony Jay died and the developer's other titles weren't doing so hot... Definitely the best we could have gotten, especially since they had to try and fit the clusterfuck that was BO2 somewhere in the game as well.
Still I'll keep some hope for a proper sequel. No more Raziel though which saddens me :(

They didn't just "plan it", it was actually in development [http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=82419] - six months in before the plug got pulled by Eidos.

Also, Tony Jay returned to the Wheel of Fate in 2006, and he was one of the mayor characters.

I was fully aware of his passing. He had a unique and powerful voice. I wonder how they're going to replace him if a sequel ever gets put into development?
