Legend of Chun-Li Withheld From Critics

For anyone still holding out hope that Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li won't turn out to be crap, here's some disheartening news - critics won't be getting advance access to the film before its Feb. 27th release.

Denying critics a chance to see - and review - a movie before it releases is rarely a good sign. For would-be moviegoers, it means that they'll either have to wait until it's been out a while, or risk going in blind on opening night without knowing what they're going to see. But more importantly, as The Cut Scene [http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/02/street-fighter-movie-not-being-screened-for-critics.html] points out - it means that the studio doesn't have confidence in the product. After all, if you think your movie's going to be a smash hit, why withhold potential positive press?

Of course, given what happened the last time Hollywood tried to make a Street Fighter movie [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89356], it's not like you'd have to be Nostradamus to predict that Legend of Chun-Li will be a stinker. Still, this seems to all but confirm fears that Hollywood will never be able to make a good videogame movie. Well, excepting the first Mortal Kombat, of course.

I'll still probably end up going to see Chun-Li myself if only because A.) Kristin Kreuk is smokin' hot, and B.) judging from the trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88650], it should have some pretty decent action scenes if nothing else.

Of course, for a proper Street Fighter experience that doesn't suck, I'll be mowing down chumps via XBL with Sagat. Maybe Chun-Li once or twice - after all, the poor girl could use a confidence boost in the face of the impending movie.

Id like to say i was dissapointed by this decision. But no doubt the only way this film will make money is off the ppl who do go in blind before they can tell everyone else to avoid it

A Street Fighter film that is awful? Haven't I already seen something like this? You know, another street fighter movie, released before this one?

No because there is no 2 in the title. Duh.

I'm almost sure it is going to suck.

Seriously, if I went to see it (and I will) and it was any good at all, I just wouldn't know what to do with myself. I think most of us know what to expect.

You keep paying for crap because there are boobs and kicking in it, they'll keep churning out crap with boobs and kicking in it in anticipation of you paying for it.

They're withholding it from critics. There is no doubt about this one. It's going to blow. If a studio thinks a movie even has a chance, they'll turn it over to a crappy critic who will pretend it's good. They only hold it back from that guy when it's so bad, they know no one will believe he liked it.

I don't want to get crusade-y here, but seriously, I'm so tired of this "let's buy crap cuz, hey at least it's got stuff we like in it."

You want a good Street Fighter movie? Play the game for awhile. Then close your eyes, and use your imagination to put the characters you just played into a cool story. It can even star yourself?

Go on, do it.

See how cool that was? You just made a better movie about Street Fighter in your head than Hollywood did! And it didn't cost you a thing, and Hollywood didn't get rewarded for bad behavior.

Sorry to rant. But we as a fanbase really need to grow up about this stuff.

Much as I adore Chun Li. Sorry...no.

Too badly burnt from the other horrors. And the last film that got withheld from the critics? The Avengers.

Video games transition to movies is very bad. And yes directors make the movies just appeal to fanboys.

Somehow, I don't think this film will do well even if CantFakeTheFunk goes to see it. He will be part of a very small minority. And he will be the smartest member of that minority (I think).

Besides, who knows? This may turn out to be the new gold standard in "so-bad-it's-good" film-making!

Lol. I've no doubt his meager ticket won't make this movie a box office sensation. But moral points are a billion times larger than paltry ticket prices, and I'm nothing if not pointlessly dedicated to arbitrary moral points.

Maybe you're right about it being so bad it will be good. I know the last Street Fighter, which I've just seen, was kind of up there.

I guess I'll just wait another 15 years to find out.

Any excuse to skip out on getting served, eh????!1
Woah. Neither the time nor place.

That being said, I'd be able to beat you while watching this movie. At the same time and with one hand.

For you, the day Legend of Chun-Li graced your theater was the most important day of your life. But for me... it was Tuesday.

Er, Friday.

Much like gaming reviews I ignore what movie critics have to say, if a game or a movie piques my interest I'm going to play it or go see it. I'm going go go see it just because I love Street Fighter and it does look good.
