You know what? Stupid is fine, if it is good stupid. This is that. As out of the blue as it kinda was, watching that mech tear stuff up is awesome!

I was talking about Zhu Li's sabotage, not Varrick's.
Zhu Li was what amounts to his second in command while building a giant machine. It's not exactly fair to hold him accountable for not checking the entire thing for possible sabotage when it's in the middle of a military base and it's being committed by a high ranking officer/engineer who he probably delegates to. And after he found that one piece was broken, he had the entire thing checked.

On the day of the demonstration, Zhu Li basically ripped out a piece right before it was to be fired (as she didn't have the time to get rid of it), so how was he supposed to stop that or catch that before the firing?
Zhu Li supposedly had sabotaged him the entire time to slow down the development of the weapon while she gathered intelligence. At least that's what I thought happened. Be that as it may, it's kind of ridiculous that he supposedly build the laser under top priority while simultaneously devoloping a unprecedented titanic robot suit.

Dammit, Shinji! You give Kamina a bad name!

OT: If there's one thing I took from this episode is that maybe, just maybe, my MakoXWu ship may come true in the end... Other than that, I guess it's time to go all "Attack on Titan" on that Gundam Unit-00...

to everyone that thought the giant EVA unit was a little out of place..
Why do people always jump to evangelion whenever there are giant robots in anything?
In this case, because the Eva reference is obvious:

Though to be fair, the design silhouette is more reminiscent of the Jet Alone than the actual Evas themselves.

The Giant robot is pretty silly but not completely beyond belief. What IS beyond belief is that they built it without anybody noticing.

I mean, do we not have SPIES or something?! Even Amon managed to build a freaking airport in the hills without anybody noticeing and an underground lair in the mansion. It feels like maybe the good guys should start using subterfuge because the Metal Gear arrived before anybody noticed, meybe we should have scouts? Spies? Informants? Saboteurs? Ju-Li did it pro-bono. Speaking of which how come she never got to see it? Are you telling me Glasses managed to build the gun and the giant robot at the same time? Where were they hiding it? What hanger is large enough to conceal such a thing? Even if you stored the parts separately like a lego project how do you fit it all together in a week?

Might not have noticed but the good guy leaders arent the brightest bulbs in the bunch.
1.They dont lift a finger to stop Kuvira, even while she is standing right in front of them, spilling her whole plan and world view into a microphone for everyone to hear.
2. The leader of Republic City waits till word that Kuvira is 2 weeks away to even begin planning the defence of his city.
3. It takes Prince Wu to suggest an evacuation plan.
4. Their entire defence relies on rapidly constructed, not tested, flying mech suits.

But as to the hiding it part. They're earth benders. Lets just assume they assembled it underground or inside a mountain.

I'm just annoyed at this point. Seriously, Kuvira is just nothing but a cold ***** who wants power. She is evil, I'd honestly say no better than Vaatu, Vaatu just had more power and capabilities. Seriously, out of all the Avatar villains, I want her dead the most. I thought I hated Unaloq, but this *****, this ***** right here.

Personally I'm quite shocked this avatar promotes kidnapping, "enhanced interrogation," and indefinite imprisonment over having to commit physical violence anymore.
That was a really blatant example of the show running into the boundaries of kids TV.

Also, how great is that giant robot!?! I can't wait to see avatar state-Korra go up against it, it's gonna be like evangelion up in this *****! Avatar is clearly trying to become the anime singularity before it ends, lol.

I would assume that anyone even suspected of spying for the republic or other nations are now spending all their time in re-education camps.
The entire regime is highly mistrusting of outsiders.

and your lego project concept isn't too unrealistic when you consider the number of earth/metalbenders involved. I mean assembling it in pieces has to be true for the gun which they just finished in any case.

anway I Think the giant mech is awesome and I am glad they kept it for a surprise reveal. I will be sad when it is deus ex machina'ed out of commission in true avatar style. along with Kuvira
All hail the great uniter!

I'm going to hold off talking about the episode in general because people will do a far better job than I.

That said, I have one thing to say. One thing that has bugged me since The Last Airbender. WHY IN HELL'S NAME DO EARTHBENDERS NOT USE PITFALL TRAPS EVER?! I don't recall a single moment where they use them and their powers are geared specifically for that. Tanks, mecha-tanks and that giant robot; all of them could be defeated by a hole with a thin layer of stone above them. Trip that giant robot and you would cripple it even if the metal benders can fix it quicker than is reasonable. I was equally irritated in the first book of Korra when they did not do that against those tanks of Amon and it is pissing me off at this point. They could have turned that entire valley into a death trap but they did not because of what reasons? Because it was unsportsmanlike behaviour? It is war damn it!

Rant over, peace.
Doesn't Kuvira have an entire army of earthbenders as well, that can detect said traps and counter them?
IIRC that is an advanced skill for earthbenders but, assuming she has a few as early warning systems, the design is still hopelessly flawed. Ignoring the fact that they have to have metalbenders to stop it collapsing under its own weight that gun was developed in an extremely short time and the recoil should topple it every time it fires. It doesn't even brace for a shot or change its weight distribution. Not to mention a good distraction or a surprise attack and a couple of earthbenders could make a pit directly under the feet before it could do anything. With its size and weight, a fall should cripple the machine as getting it upright will be a nightmare.

The show did set up the idea of a giant metal thing earlier this season with the metal domes of Zoafu being taken down. Being a mecha fan myself, I don't mind the inclusion of a giant robot. Unfortunately, whatever studio is responsible for their mechanical animation isn't up to the task. The rolling mech-suits from season one are appropriately clunky when they move, and the martial arts and bending animations have been great overall. The streamlined suits of season 4 however, are poorly animated. They're incongruous with the rest of the animation and don't move with the sense of weight that they should. The suits more bounce along in a fashion that would be more suitable to the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. This problem is exacerbated by the the massive scale the robot. They animate an arm or leg moving into position for balance, but we never see the whole thing move or take a stance believably. Maybe the next episode with remedy that as they figure out what animations work best, but they've had all season to get the smaller suits worked out and have yet to succeed.

I expect that they're trying to enforce artificial tension by presenting the robot as unstoppable. They'll let the conflict play out, but I'll be shocked if they don't just tip it over at some point. It's just too easy to knock over. A giant tank would be more useful. The Fire Nation built a giant train drill, so why not a tank with the cannon concealed and protected by a dome? (Obviously because they wanted a big mech.) They may further escalate the drama by having it stand up under the control of an incensed Kuvira, but that machine is going to fall over.

The robot reminded me of the Eva the government tried to build in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Personally, I want this season to end with Toph beating up Kuvira and Korra regaining her connections with the past avatars. OR, Kuvira wins. Just complete the Empire Strikes Back motif and have the villains win. It would surprise me.

Wait...does this mean the next Avatar (that I don't see happening) would be all about magic martial arts inside massive mechanized monstrosities of mobile suits? Hell, they're only a few decades from space.

I love this setting man.
