Legendary Final Fantasy Composer Scoring The Last Story

Legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu is teaming up with the original Final Fantasy creator for a game with a title eerily similar to "Final Fantasy."

When we first caught glimpses of Mistwalker's The Last Story - a Wii-exclusive JRPG headed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97900-Nintendo-and-Mistwalker-Team-Up-for-The-Last-Story] - in action, sharp-eyed (or rather, sharp-eared?) gamers noticed that the music sounded somewhat familiar. While the composer in question hadn't been announced, many hypothesized that it might be Nobuo Uematsu, a renowned game composer best known for his work on the Final Fantasy series.

If you were one of those gamers, give yourself a gold star.

Uematsu is indeed the composer for The Last Story, a project that sees him teaming up with his old Final Fantasy pal Sakaguchi for the first time since 2007's Lost Odyssey. Okay, okay, that isn't actually that long a time, but it's the principle of the thing.

Anyone who picks up a first edition copy of the game when it hits shelves in Japan this January will receive a free mini soundtrack CD along with your game. Considering Uematsu is one of the biggest musical names in the business, that's probably a neat little bonus for most people. Sadly, there's no release date here in the West yet.

So it's a game helmed by the original creator of Final Fantasy with a soundtrack composed by the iconic Final Fantasy composer and a title that sounds like someone took "Final Fantasy" and just opened up a thesaurus. Judging from the little we've seen, though, it actually doesn't look much like a Final Fantasy title, though. What strange wonders will we see next?

Dammit, you're right.

Huh.

I guess there are only so many titles you can give a game.

OT: I have no interest in the genre and, hence, the game, but I'll admit - this is the best choice a JRPG dev could go with.

....where are they going with this exactly? Welp, I suppose I'll have to buy it, I'm just attracted to Uematsu's work like this and can't escape it, same with Lost Odyssey....stupid griffon.

Yes! A new JRPG made by some of the very few people who still know how to make a good JRPG? Sign me up!

edit: Oh, wait, I'll have to buy a Wii? Screw that.

Personally I love it on the Wii, as I always thought the Wii was the ideal system for console JRPG's. For what you need for a good JRPG the PS3 and 360 are basically overkill, which will lead to increased development costs without much net benefit for the developers. Well maybe the 360 wouldn't be too bad, but then you don't have a large install base in your primary market. And let's face it, the 360 and PS3 have been taken over by WRPG's. So why not develop them for the Wii? You got a large install base in all markets, it's powerful enough to get the job done with reasonable development costs, and not including handhelds there's a vacuum right now for this sort of game.

And that seems to be what's happening anyways, The Last Story isn't the only JRPG finding it's way onto the Wii. I mean you may not like the Wii, but wouldn't that opinion change a little if it finally gives the JRPG genre a home it hasn't had since the PS2?

You had me until "- a Wii-exclusive"... though to be fair it was on the second line. So I guess you didn't have me for very long, if really at all.

Tip to the wise, if you are going to lock yourself into a single piece of hardware.. try to make it the best hardware for your game.

Other than trying something like Dragon Quest: Swords (which I found pretty fun except for a few of SWORDS mechanics), I'm rather fuzzy on what exact gimmick the Wii has going for it to bolster the classic JRPG over say... the PS3 or 360?

So... you are saying that it's the deficiencies in the Wii that make it a home for software that doesn't need something of the caliber of the PS3 or 360.

I'll see you that and raise you a "Hell, why stop there? Let's go DS or PSP exclusive, with a release through a software store." and a "Well, an 8-bit system was good enough for FF1, right?"

The is the most stereotypically final fantasy looking game I have ever seen lol. It has it all! The soundtrack sounds like it was lifted straight from FF7, huge swords and weird hair and the girl at the end is like a combination of Aerith and Yuna lol.

I am SUPER excited for this. All of those things look awesome and the combat looks fun.

Funny that even though the title is so similar to final fantasy, the composer is the same and that logo at the end is very FF-eque is still looks pretty different. The game looks interesting.

I'm looking forwards to sometime in the future when he will work on "The Concluding Tale" or "The Hindmost Adventure".

Yes! Finally a Decent square JRPG for the Wii! It feels like it's been years since this has happened!!

oh wait.. that's because IT HAS!! That's too bad they won't port to other consoles, but that's te dev's call. I have a Wii so I'm good, but my sympathies to whomever misses out on this adventure (who appreciate JRPGs)

I'm gonna go and point out Dissidia here. That's a PSP exclsive... Scribblenaughts which could have had a wii port since the remote can be used like an oversized pen. They exist. The Wii doesn't get enough respect because it's library sucks, much like the gamecube. The hardware issues have pretty much been sorted thanks to the plus (they're now 100% integrated into new remotes too) The problem is, like the Move and Kinect, they don't know who's got the hardware or not, but if it's developed for the 1-1 motion of the plus, then why is it such a problem?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Wii owner, yes (excuse me for only being able to afford only one console) but we've gotten a lot of neglect. Most of the time I'm sitting on the sidelines while most people are arguing about the degrees of awesomeness for 360 and PS3 exclusives so SHUSH!!
