just remember, that these same people also made BLUE DRAGON. I mean, both Lost Odyssey and blue dragon had some very basic problems that should not appear in video games today. Lost Odyssey had random based battles with LONG ASS loading times, and cut scenes that lasted forever with sometimes no saving break.

Blue Dragon just "I'll never give up." that is all.

but at the same time they also made classics such as Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy 7 so who knows.

I hope they design the game in the sense that a lot of people who want to play JRPGS may not h have the long stretches of time to play something like Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey anymore. Things like shorter cut scenes and more frequently able to save would do wonders alone.

I want to think this'll be good, but the fact that it's on the Wii doesn't fill me with hope. Mandatory gimmicks a la "HURR POINT AT THE SCREEN TO AIM YER CROSSBOW DERP" all but killed Twilight Princess, Other M and Mario Galaxy for me. I can't see how The Last Story will be any different.

And on that note, I'm still waiting for console JRPG developers to get it through their heads that are players who don't harbor that bizarre, illogical loathing for turn-based combat. In fact, many of us prefer it over pseudo-Kingdom Hearts style combat.

It looks like a mix between Final Fantasy, Gears of War, Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect (somewhat). I leave that to you guys to decide whether if that's bad.

A wii exclusive?! Nooooooo Why must you do this Nobuo? I have to get this game now which means I'll need to get a Wii but I hate the Wii but I love the games you do music for.
Personally I love it on the Wii, as I always thought the Wii was the ideal system for console JRPG's. For what you need for a good JRPG the PS3 and 360 are basically overkill, which will lead to increased development costs without much net benefit for the developers. Well maybe the 360 wouldn't be too bad, but then you don't have a large install base in your primary market. And let's face it, the 360 and PS3 have been taken over by WRPG's. So why not develop them for the Wii? You got a large install base in all markets, it's powerful enough to get the job done with reasonable development costs, and not including handhelds there's a vacuum right now for this sort of game.

And that seems to be what's happening anyways, The Last Story isn't the only JRPG finding it's way onto the Wii. I mean you may not like the Wii, but wouldn't that opinion change a little if it finally gives the JRPG genre a home it hasn't had since the PS2?
Not at all, I dislike the Wii as a system, not based on the games that it has although I'll admit there are very few games on the Wii I would even consider playing. I have played a few games on the Wii and it's not something I'd be interested in purchasing at any point in time. Sadly not even for Nobuo Uematsu.

I'm gonna go and point out Dissidia here. That's a PSP exclsive... Scribblenaughts which could have had a wii port since the remote can be used like an oversized pen. They exist. The Wii doesn't get enough respect because it's library sucks, much like the gamecube. The hardware issues have pretty much been sorted thanks to the plus (they're now 100% integrated into new remotes too) The problem is, like the Move and Kinect, they don't know who's got the hardware or not, but if it's developed for the 1-1 motion of the plus, then why is it such a problem?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Wii owner, yes (excuse me for only being able to afford only one console) but we've gotten a lot of neglect. Most of the time I'm sitting on the sidelines while most people are arguing about the degrees of awesomeness for 360 and PS3 exclusives so SHUSH!!
Nope, no shushing here. I wasn't implying that the handhelds were lacking in good JRPGS. Though I wouldn't really put Dissidia in there as a great example for the PSP.. I'd put Crisis Core, Valkaria Chronicles 2, Clandun, the re-releases of the Personas and the availability of FF 7, 8, and 9 as well as Wild Arms in the PSN store as better examples of available PSP-playable JRPGS. And that's not even touching the stacks of Dragon Quest and FF remakes on the DS for the other side.

With the advent of the Move and the Kinect, making a Wii exclusive is really giving yourself the short end of the stick... even when you factor in the improved wiimote sensors. and lower entry level price point.

But my original point really had nothing to do with comparing motion controls. It was based on console graphic and processing ability. The Wii's limit of HD (technically not HD, but EDTV) ability stops at 480p which when stretched to the almost 4x sized 720p screens of your entry level HDTVs or even approching the 9x real estate of a 1080p... it's just not going to look good.

Anyway, I'm rambling...

As I said originally.. if you are going to lock yourself into one console, you should pick the one that has the tech that best suits your game design. As an owner of all three of the usual suspects... there's just not much a Wii is going to do for your game. If you are Wii-exclusive, it seems that you are looking for your game to do something for the Wii.

Like using a popular license you own to drum up customers through icon loyalty.. I'm looking at YOU, Mario, Samus and Link!

Now.. having said all that. I DO like my Wii. It's just not the console I want to use for what I hope is an epic, dozens of hours long adventure that I can't put down even though I've made dents in the wall throwing the controller in frustration. (Ahhh, FF1 memories)

Lost Odyssey is my favorite game soundtrack, so I'll definitely be looking into this. But a Wii exclusive, reeeeally? Guess I'll just be listening to the music. Great graphics for Wii though.

Your last paragraph was read to me in an obnoxious British-Aussie accent... surprise surprise.

Anyways, I do see your point, but what's wrong with having epics on the Wii anyways? If I earned anything from the abomination that is Crystal bearers , it's that the Wii still has the potential to house good games. The combat engine sucked, as well as the story, and the paper-cut-out of a main character and heroine, but ultimately it was packed with some clever gimicks like the opening where you fall through the air blasting... whatever they're called and the train sneaking. The only thing I think it was missing was some plot depth, character development and SWORDS. It looked nice and the first time I stepped into the main city I was amazed and how good a job Square had actually done (but at the same time they fooled me into thinking Crystal Bearers was a steam punk. T.T)

Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy and (debatably for most) Other M, (yes you did mention these, but there's a reason they sold. They're good!) are sill epic adventures that I found myself unable to put down. Not many games have that kind of power over me anymore, especially ones released for the Wii. As a single console owner, I get really sad when we get the short end of... well everything. Even the company we support neglects us. What does that tell you?

You might just think I'm a die hard fan here, but exclusives is part of why I picked the Wii over a PS3 or a 360. The genres that they put out are just that much more appealing to me. (with the exception of missing out on a few really good JRPGs) Tales of Symphonia 2, (again debatably for some) I thoroughly enjoyed! Like Twilight Princess, it had that sort of semi-mature taste but had just enough fun for me to keep wanting to see what happens next.

It's also almost an east vs west debate in the same sense that most Nintendo titles are rather linear and provide a lack of customization. Again though, is that a big deal? If you made Shepard dress in hot pink it doesn't affect the gameplay, but doesn't it give you the feel of... out of character almost?

Last one there is a bit opinionated, but do you see where I'm coming from?

Wall 'o text, anyways I do meet you halfway there though.

That's it, distract me with a flattering comment comparing me to a charismatic stallion and try to be all reasonable. Preposterous!

....where are they going with this exactly? Welp, I suppose I'll have to buy it, I'm just attracted to Uematsu's work like this and can't escape it,
If Nobuo Uematsu's work were turned into a woman, I would marry her in a second. Well, unless of course on that same day they also made a woman using Yasunori Mitsuda's music... then it'd be kind of a tough choice.

I must be the only one here who loves both Uematsu and Sakaguchi, and thinks this game looks and sounds lame as all hell.

The music has no personality or charm at all, none, you could transplant it into *insert generic fantasy/espionage game title here* and it wouldn't seem out of place. It's just filler, and not even very good filler at that.

And though much can't be said about the gameplay from just a few minute youtube video, I'm having a hard time drawing parallels to the elements in Sakaguchi's older games that make this one a supposed "MUST BUY OMG SAKAGUCHI". They made a real bullet-point out of being able to bump into the townsfolk, I wonder how much time was wasted on a feature that, I can only imagine, 4 people on earth will give a damn about when they could have been working on something a bit more substantial?

This game, though looking damned good for a Wii game, looks no better than any other, stale, generic, tired old JRPG. At no point did I see what makes this game something to even get out of bed for. I will gladly elaborate if asked to.

Again, I love the past works of Uematsu/Sakaguchi deeply, but this just feels like there were greater elements in creative control here, and I imagine marketability was one of them.

Forget everything I just said, just hire Amano and let him have creative control over how the game looks and I'll forgive every shortcoming this game is sure to be perforated with.
