The song "Tried to kill the metal" comes to mind when I read this news post.

Jack Thompson tried to kill the games, but games crushed him with logic.
Michale Atkinson tried to kill the games, but games just waited for him to get old.
Leeland Yee tried to kill the games, but games put on their +5 legal armor and brought down the mighty banhammer!

He really should have seen his defeat coming, oh well. Who's next in line to try where others have failed. Keep em coming, we need more XP and phat lootz.

-EDIT-
You know what, I'm just gonna post the song as our victory tune. Just replace Metal and all who tried to kill it with games and the ilk that keep trying to kill it.

please +5 legal armor? it was at least +10:)

"has forced the videogame industry to do a better job at appropriately rating these games."

GAH! For years, the videogame industry has been better and more complaint at rating their material than any other medium, you twit (so many other words I'd like to put in place of that one).

Nice response: Meeh whatever senator.

Id response: All I can say is that I hope this guy ends up as forgotten as Jack Thompson.
True. Video game haters who don't know anything about games are, with their "ideals", heading to a historical unmarked grave. Thompson is already there, as is Clinton, I think; and Atkinson and Yee are heading down that path to be forgotten as well. Meanwhile, games will thrive, and laugh about the times when big politicans with brains the size of the heads of pins tried to bring down an innovative type of entertainment and art.

You know what people. Videogames are now art, now that they have the 1st amendment, so all these people are complaining about things that are not gonna change any time soon.

seriously People. Just shut up and wait till the next big thing so you can hate on that, and say how corrupts the youth. If fact I have come up with a solution. Complain about something that people used to like but wont defend any more like Ferbies.

"As a result of their decision, Wal-Mart and the videogame industry will continue to make billions of dollars at the expense of our kids' mental health and the safety of our community," Yee said. "It is simply wrong that the videogame industry can be allowed to put their profit margins over the rights of parents and the well-being of children."

Dear Mr Yee, your implications seem to be that the rights of parents are higher than the rights of everyone else. Fuck You. Just because I do not choose to have a brood of brats, does not mean that my idiot neighbors with their six children that they are screwing up, not because of videogames, but because they are shite parents, should have yet another boundary set for them by the government.

"certain that this eight-year legislative and legal battle has raised the consciousness of this issue for many parents and grandparents, and has forced the videogame industry to do a better job at appropriately rating these games."
Video games have been more or less appropriately rated since the huge outcry against the original Mortal Kombat back in 1993 which resulted in the establishment of the ESRB and similar organizations. Whether or not parents and grandparents actually pay any attention to the ratings handed down by these organizations however is another issue entirely. Perhaps you should've spent all that time and money you wasted on this bloody campaign of yours on educating said parents and grandparents about these ratings instead.

Those poor, defenseless parents. Can't do anything to stop their kids from buying violent games, and they can't most certainly explain to children how those things aren't real, and how they don't affect minds..

I first played turok seeds of evil when I was 5yrs old. I now have a well paying job, a college degree on the way, and a decent bank account. I now question the actual impact of games on the mentality of children. There are people who are crazy but it may not be the games that make them so.

Why bother reporting on the reactions of people whose reactions we could all pretty much fill in for ourselves at this point?
Because we won and now we're savoring the deliciously salty tears of the politicians and overbearing parent organizations who were fool enough to waste millions in taxpayer dollars fighting for such a ridiculous bill.
You hit it right on the money there KeyMaster. I am enjoying this like the depraved follower of Slaanesh that I am. I love that fact that this bill was shot down and slammed by seven out of nine judges on the hill. This gives our media protection and those git politicians and parent groups no true leg to stand on now. And honestly? I hope California has to pay back every single cent that this trial cost the EMA.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have souls and tears to feast on~

California Senator and notorious videogame hater Leland Yee says today's Supreme Court decision granting First Amendment protection to games is a blow to the rights of parents and the safety of our communities.
The only right parents didn't get with this ruling is the right to not have to raise their children properly. Now they actually have to keep a close eye on their children's hobbies, those poor deprived parents. If doing so is so much of a burden, they shouldn't have had children in the first place.

Who the fuck cares? The case is over, video games are here to stay. Let's be on with our lives for fuck's sake...

Oh, and it's not the developers', publishers' or retailers' fault of some jackass kid playing something like (gods forbid on so many levels) BMX XXX and them not knowing what the hell is going on. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they had to get their grimy little hands on such a game game from somewhere, or rather, from someone...

No, it's... pretty much the same as it has been for years.

The only way the industry could really do a better job is if rating a game 18+ (AO) doesn't effectively ban it from sale. Video games need an 18+ rating, just like movies have.

What about parents who want to play violent video games? Ones who have difficulty walking and give their 16 year olds money to go to the store and pick them up for them. Seem like their rights would have gone right out the window.

Man, who is that guy to tell me how to spend my money? People are allowed to spend their money as they wish, whether is for entertainment or a waste or whatever. Who does this guy think he is?

Sure, M Rated games are not good for kids, and being a gamer who makes a living by selling games, I see plenty of parents who don't really care about the M Rating in a game. Whatever, those are their kids. Just like money, we can't tell their parents what to do and what not to do with their kids. It's the same with movies, series, even books.

Geez, God forbid these morbid toys continue to be sold. I mean, drugs and rapists and murders? Pssh, pussy stuff! Video games are the true danger here! Quick! Let's all start a civil war against these monsters! [/sarcasm]

Actually movies do have an equivalent rating and it is equally broken. It's called NC-17 and most theaters in this country refuse to exhibit those movies, and you can't buy them at major retailers. As I get older, I'm not up in arms over the AO rating as much, since the lack of sale of 18+ games is dictated by the market and not by the government. It is still baloney that Manhunt 2 got censored, but that would have been a fairly mediocre game, grainy filter or not.

Games are more regulated than movies are because DVD manufacturers can't prevent someone from creating pornography and making it function with the system, whereas The Big Three have pretty tight control of what can work with their systems (legitimately) and what cannot. They practically have the law on their side, too. (See GeoHot case before it was settled)

I'm just happy the Controller isn't paying him (or anyone else in the legislature) right now. I can't think of many other people more willfully ignorant than Senator Yee. I don't get how he could fight for freedom of speech in schools then pull this crap as often as he can, /super fail.
