Second Sight was on all 3 platforms last gen but now I always see it in bargain bins for less than 5 dollars. It is a shame that it never caught on because it was a good game. It had decent enough third person shooting aspects but it is one of few games that managed to add a psychic power aspect that worked really well. Story was pretty decent as well, though I can't remember all details.
Legend of Dragoon was mention but deserves another mention. I wouldn't call it flat out better than FF7 (it loses by miles in the soundtrack department), but both were really good games.
Beyond Good and Evil I wouldn't call lesser known, especially to most people who frequent sites like this, but it was a great game that didn't become popular. If you don't know of it, it was a adventure game with slight combat but also some stealth aspects. It has a photography element you don't see often enough, but its strongest aspect was a solid story and 3 fantastic main characters.

believe it or not, final fantasy tactics for playstation, just magnificent, no matter how much you power level the game will still kick your ass. it's the darkest final fantasy in the franchise, and it seems no one will talk about it. Possibly because Ajora (Jesus stand in) is both the prophet and antichrist of the in game religion. Very dark.
The reason I hate it is because it is so slow. And not just slow from a SRPG perspective, but just plain slow. Slow text with no speed options was the deal breaker for me. Luckily they fixed this and the games other problems with War of the Lions on PSP.
However, I would call this far from unknown. Every SRPG gets compared to tactics and it usually falls into a "too much like it so it sucks" or "not enough like FFT so it sucks"
