I must buy at least 10 poppies ever rememberance day, I keep losing them yet I never mind buying another. My immediate family was either too old or too young to serve but I'm named after a great uncle of mine who was killed over france when his wingmate crashed into him. My fiancee's grandfather recieved a purple heart and another high honor from the RCAF for rescuing the radioman in his burning bomber.

I will always remember.

Remember the forgotten and unpopular wars. Not every veteran fought in Iraq, or the Falklands, or a World War.
Remember Korea, and Aden, and Malaya, and Somalia. Remember the men who died flying food and fuel in to West Berlin. Remember the Vietnam vets, and the Afghantsi, who came home from a war they didn't want, to scorn and derision.
And remember the parents, children, siblings, and spouses who will never see someone again.

My grandfather was in World War I. (He lied about his age to join and was old by the time my mother was born, and he died when I was young. Many people are amazed that a person my age had a grandfather in the First World War. Just wanted to clear that up.)

Anyway, he fought in the war, but got seriously injured in a gas attack. We still have the medals and parchment he received. Although my mother said he didn't talk about the war much, there were a few things my mother remembers him talking about. The stink of the trench, the constant, wet chill that wouldn't go away, and the noise.

My great grandfather fought in the First World War. I never met him, as he died before I was born. The only reminders of him are a framed photo of him in uniform that my dad has, and the fact that I have his name.

My grandfather served in the Korean War, the "forgotten war", and it's disheartening to always hear people talk as if the two world wars are the only ones that happened since 1914.
Even Afghanistan, where my father is helping rebuild Kandahar, seems to be ignored by everyone except the media and politicians.

And here is a Rememberance Day song from Nova Scotia, where I live.

Quite a beautiful song.

A patriotic salute to those who risked their lives, and those who gave theirs, to make the world a much better place.

And a happy hearted punch in the air for the day off school. :p

My grandfather served in the Korean War. He was promised shore leave (or whatever the proper military term is called) for two weeks. Just before the plane took off a higher officer stole my grandfather's seat and my grandfather had to remain in Korea. The plane crashed and everyone died.

Another one of my relatives (don't remember which one)refused to fight in WW1. He claimed it was just an excuse for military contractors to make bullets and stuff. Later this view would become much more popular. He was attacked in jail by child rapists and murders who considered themselves above him. Says a lot about this country.

Like most I have a grandfather who severed in WWII, I was told he wasn't the same man when he came back. Always avoided the discussions of the time he had severed. But a year ago I got up the courage and ask him, his answers resonates with in me. He said this "Elliot was wrong the world ended with a bang"
