I'm getting ready to go to a job interview this Friday (august 9th). It'll be my first "real" job interview and I don't quite know what I'm doing so I'd like some advice.

I really don't like talking about myself without being asked a specific question. I find it awkward, and I tend not to really know what to say. Because of this I'm really dreading the inevitable "tell me about yourself" question that I hear tends to start off many interviews.

So this is where you come in my dear escapist chums, what kind of information would you tell an interviewer when they say, "Tell me about yourself?"

And of course, since many of us like to get input on our interview technique, feel free to post questions of your own that you need help answering and maybe someone else will be able to give you some advice, or provide a helpful a hint.

First off, what is the job? Without that information none of us can help you effectively sell yourself.
Police officer.

It's a panel style interview with three people, a high ranking officer (probably a lieutenant), a patrol officer, and a civilian volunteer.

In that case, I may be of some use.

I've had my fair share of Military interviews. I'd expect they would be looking for similar qualities. I for one went on about how I was capable of working well with other people and on my own. That I was physically active and that I wanted to join for whatever these reasons.

Try and sell yourself on why you want to be a Police Officer. That'll be the key. Tell them you've had a great interest in the Police Force for a long time, that you respect what they do and so on. As with any interview just sell yourself on what they would want.
Well, there's a couple of questions that I know for sure will come up, one of which is obviously "why do you want to be a police officer?" I have my answer for that decently planned out, something about how since my family immigrated to the US it's provided a lot of opportunities for them that they couldn't get elsewhere, and how I want to give back to the community because of that, and that policing was an obvious choice for me because of my fascination with the law and my background in it (I majored in criminal justice in college).

I'm trying to come up with an answer for "tell us about yourself" that hopefully won't overlap with too much of my other answer, just in case they decide to ask both.
