So with every classic video game, rumors always spread around about how you can "unlock this and that". Like the Sonic X rumor in SSBM, or Mew in Pokemon.

How do these rumors start, are any of them ever true, and how much do they piss you off?

Someone who is full of crap always feels the need to convince you that this is the truth and nothing but, and instead of trying it out others will just tell others about it until it is everywhere.

My friend attempted to convince me you can get weapon upgrades in SSBM, I didn't believe it for one second but others did, and it spread for a bit.

Some person somewhere gets bored and starts to make stuff up that sounds like it could be true and then the rumor just spreads like the bubonic plague.

Just not from within the game itself.

As for these rumors in general, if they sound plausible but are hard to test, they're pretty easy for people to pass on.

Just for the record you could in Yellow couldn't you? I'm pretty sure I had Mew, or Mewtwo, and my brother couldn't get it.

EDIT: This was almost 10 years ago, so it could have never happened...

Do you believe me? No. Because it sounds ridiculous, right?

The lies are believable enough to be spread without too much opposition.

It might start out as something people wish was in the game, and they want it so badly that they become convinced there's a secret way to get it.

Some people enjoy screwing with people. I once heard that if you did the konami code in some nintendo 64 game you would unlock a level skip feature. It was something that sounded true but once you try it ,of course, doesnt work. I did find a few to be true though, and as for your third part I never have a problem unless they are rediculous or impossile.

There is no Cow Level

*snip*

edit:

Don't know why I said that... It just felt... right.
Anyway, the Cow Level started out as this kind of rumor but then Blizzard went ahead and indulged the fans.
And that, is why I love blizzard.

It was snuck in by one of the developers, you caught it in the town with misty in it. You had to talk fight a trainer and walk back, then it would appear at level 5. There was some rumor about how you got it in the ship, but that didn't work (or I couldn't make it work). The trainer methods I got to work though (pretty sure it was on pokemon red).

or Mew in Pokemon.
Much to my own annoyance, you actually can unlock Mew in Pokemon, it's a hugely elaborate glitch that you have to exploit, but a friend of mine recently did it.
We're planning a Pokemon Stadium battle and that bastard found out how to get Mew, yet some how I'm not allowed any of the legendary birds or mewtwo, not sure how that's fair really.
I thought it was only possible with a game shark.

That's the alluring thing about mew.
I mean, it was programmed into the game, and was in every way functional...
My question is: was it taken outta the game, or was it just programmed in there for the sake of things? I mean, if the game hadn't been a hit, wouldn't mew's existence have faded into obscurity, save for a few hardcore fans and copyright lisences?

Also, there really IS a truck [http://glitchcity.info/docs/annetruck] by the SS Anne.

Did you know that if you give Dragonite a firestone in the mystery caves behind Mewtwo it turns into Yoshi? It doesn't really, but I leveled up a damn Dratini to find out.

Well I think it was only really meant to be given to you by Nintendo at certain events, but of course, these events were few and far between outside of Japan.
And yeah, there is a truck by the SS Anne, but you can't move it with strength or anything else.

To actually stay on topic, on a Fable II forum that I'm a member of staff for, I saw someone do just this. Some kid wanted to know how to get your dog back after it died, after you chose a different option to "the few" at the end of the game. One of our older members made up an elaborate lie that involved sacrificing a small army of villagers and donating a lot of money as well as doing some other random stuff. It was widely believed by our younger members until one of them actually spent the 10 hours or so required to try it, and even after it was disproved, a few people still believed it.
So, what causes it? Stupidity.
