Welcome to my Let's Play of Nethack. I'm not going to actually win, as you probably know, due to the tremendous difficulty of Nethack, but I will play multiple games with varying degrees of success. As I do so, I will take screenshots and write a story for our unfortunately soon-to-be-dead character.

So, welcome to the dungeon.

You are Escanton, a young Orcish Barbarian in his prime of life. You have spent most of your life feeling as if you had some greater purpose; as if you just weren't doing the right thing. So, you began to ask around about much more interesting things to do than busting up and pillaging villages.

By word-of-mouth, you heard of a mysterious Amulet, within a mysterious dungeon. This amulet is called the Amulet of Yendor, and nearly everything about it is shrouded in mystery. Some say it is a worthless trinket from the olden times; some say it will bestow upon you mighty magics with which you can rule the world; and some say that when it is found, the gods themselves will bow to the one who found it; presenting to them the gift of immortality, riches, and great power.

The only thing that you know is true about it is that it exists, it is at the bottom of a great dungeon, and you want it.

After spending a few days preparing for this great journey, you embarked early one morning, climbing down into the dungeon wherein it allegedly exists. You don't have much food, any great weapons, nor any powerful armor, but you are determined to either get this mysterious artifact, or die trying.

Updates coming soon, and hopefully often. If this character dies, I will, of course, make a new one and start a new story/adventure. I'm still unsure of whether I will be writing this in a first-person 'adventure log' sort of style, in a third-person style, or continuing with the second person that I have going on here. Maybe comment on it some and tell me what you'd like to read most?

I decided to go with third person after thinking about it. I wish there was more interest in this. D: Hopefully I can actually get it off the ground.

Escanton briefly glanced around the so-called dungeon. At first glance, it didn't seem too bad. It wasn't exactly what you'd call well-lit or pretty, but it certainly had a sort of charm that seemed to escape him. He saw a small pile of gold lying on the floor in front of him. He didn't particularly expect to get a chance to spend it until he arrived back with the amulet, but it wasn't much and didn't even begin to encumber him.

As he stepped toward his left and into a nearby hallway, he caught a quick glimpse of something. Two somethings, in fact, both the same size and general shape. They looked kind of like large, purple and red spiders, each with small jolts of electricity running along their abdomens. Escanton tried to move closer, to catch a better view, but they skittered away the second he moved. He slowly crept through the hall, keeping an eye out for the bugs. Shortly ahead, he could see another lit room, the two bugs standing in the doorway. With the light showing the bugs better, he could see that they were Grid Bugs; generally weak creatures. The only real danger about them is that they rather hurt when they bite, as they let out a pretty nasty electric shock rather than the venom that most bugs would. Escanton knew all about Grid Bugs, from back when he was a child. The things were everywhere, and the children were advised against getting near them: it was expected that the voltage could kill a kid were they bitten. And, well, it nearly did, but not before Escanton bashed the thing's head in.

He killed the two grid bugs with ease.

There didn't seem to be anything of interest in the room, other than a door, which after some brief consideration, he decided to come back and deal with later.

Escanton continued to explore the dungeon, heading off toward the relative East. Along the way, he used his battleaxe to dispatch another Grid Bug, discovering another small room, empty aside from a small bag of dispatched gold and a few arrows, which were, of course, completely useless to him.

Through the doorway at the other side of the room, Escanton found a pretty large chamber, the largest one yet. He cautiously stepped in, looking about, grabbing some more gold he found on the ground as he went, and walked into a hallway across the room from him. He saw a boulder, and, curious, he shoved his full brunt against it, forcing it down to the end of the hallway, where it became lodged. Frustrated, he forced his weight against it for a few more minutes, before finally turning around and exiting the hallway.
