Chapter 105: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

The zombie whales have moved close enough to the fort to become a nuisance. Though I doubt they will ever catch a dwarf, their mere presence is causing unrest. I'm afraid I have no choice but to send the military out and hope for the best.
The whales haven't stuck together, and considering their slow speed I doubt we have to worry about those lagging behind rushing in to fight. Therefore we should be able to handle each one separately, which will make things a lot easier. I'm not quite sure why I'm even worried about this. I mean they may be big, but I'm pretty sure forgotten beasts and rampaging ettins pose bigger threats to us.
11th Malachite, 1059, Mid-Summer
If there's one thing I've learned after watching many battles, it is that there is strength in numbers. Or to be more blunt, those that lack numbers are likely to be horribly slaughtered. So one lesson that I've had Root and the other commanders repeatedly drill into their recruit's heads is that running ahead and playing the hero is likely to get you killed.
Which is why I was surprised to see Asmel, a veteran soldier, several yards ahead of her comrades.
Maybe she thinks her skill makes her invincible, that she can handle the threat alone. Evidently forgetting the lesson of one bold soldier who was devoured by a forgotten beast due to his overconfidence.
She approached the giant beast alone; attacking before it even took notice of her presence. Perhaps she figured that if she moved alone she might have the element of surprise?
Well to her credit she did catch it off guard, but this is a zombie whale. It doesn't really matter if you ambush it when most attacks are but a mild annoyance to it.
This is where I started getting nervous. The whale responded by crashing against her with all its might. This of course knocked her down, leaving her completely exposed. Being a skilled soldier she recovered quickly, but the whale simply knocked her down again. The two were locked in a cycle of charging and falling, one that would only end when either the whale made a mistake or Asmel ran out of energy.
It is fortunate that the rest of the military arrived quickly, but by then another zombie whale had shambled onto the scene and was blocking them. Before they could reach Asmel they would have to take down this whale.
Of course, this whale was set upon by the bulk of the military. As a result it was felled quickly. The military then rushed to the aid of Asmel and took down the whale just in time.
One might wonder why only two whales are mentioned here. Well, it seems that the other two whales have somehow managed to be caught in cage traps.
So in the end everything turned out fine, but this could have easily been a disaster. A less skilled dwarf would have been crushed if they were in Asmel's position. I must urge everyone to exercise more caution in the future.

I find that most recruits approach military life with reluctance, but Gonzo20 has adapted very quickly despite his lack of formal training. Says it's his "holy duty" to server, whatever that means. It makes me wonder why never let him into the military in the first place is he's so eager.
I wish the same could be said of his subordinates Signpost and Kyoufuu. They're not too happy about being in the military.
I suppose it's only to be expected, what with them being newlyweds. I believe they came to Reveredtour on a whim and didn't expect to spend their honeymoon hunting warthogs and gazelle.
26th Malachite, 1059, Mid-Summer
More migrants already?!? I...well I wasn't expecting that. I mean we can take them in, but I wasn't really ready for this. I didn't think this many people would be coming here so quickly!
It seems there about 8 dwarves among them. Hopefully some of them have military training, because that's where most of them are going to end up.
3rd Galena, 1059, Late Summer
With the new dwarves settled in, I decided to take count of how many of us are living here now. In total, 91 dwarves currently reside in Reveredtour.
I'm pretty sure that's the highest our forts population has ever been! I decided to compare this to the death toll and...uh...well it could be worse.
Let's just focus on the positives instead. We still have some gaps in our workforce, but none of these migrants had the skills needed to fill them. So most of them have been forced into masonry or conscripted.
None of them have any fighting skills, but that won't stop us. Actually, that's not entirely true. A dwarf named Mesca had some decent skills, but he was put into the Immortal Rags instead.
8th Galena, 1059, Late Summer
The new recruits have had time to gather equipment and arm themselves, though I regret to say that some of them have had to resort to using gear left by the goblins. The forge masters simply aren't producing equipment fast enough to keep everyone fully equipped. Many of the new recruits are complaining about the draft, and I'm not entirely sure if they are ready for combat.
Well they better get ready fast because they're about to experience it.
I really don't get why all these creatures keep coming to Reveredtour. I suppose it doesn't matter, because we'll have to kill them no matter why they are here. This one didn't show up in the Crypt so I doubt it's going to dive into the lake. I'll have the entire military guard the entrance to the fort as usual. It won't get past them.
12th Galena, 1059, Late Spring
In the miasma filled depths of the cavern, it was rather difficult to see anything. Numerous zombies locked away in cage traps caused the entire passage to be flooded with the purple haze. Perhaps it is because of this that the beast Kung managed to catch the soldiers' off-guard.
Kung came from the left, surprising the inattentive Signpost. He didn't expect to be the center of attention in the fight. Fortunately, Kung decided not to attack him. For whatever reason it instead went after Goden's giant leopard instead.
This was, of course, a huge mistake. While a giant leopard is threatening it doesn't compare to an angry dwarven soldier. Before Kung could he even manage to significantly harm its desired prey it found itself pushed back and suffering from many injuries.
Really it wasn't much of a fight. Kung was soon crippled with pain, at which point Goden put the beast out of its misery.
If there's anything this fight has shown us it is the importance of war beasts. They can distract our enemies and give our soldiers valuable time to strike back. Some overseers neglect to raise them, and I can't say I really understand why.
15th Galena, 1059, Late Summer
Some odd human has shown up outside the fort. I've been expecting the caravan, but this human is alone for some reason.
She's wearing the same clothes as the human law-giver I met last year, but I can tell that this isn't the same person. I have no clue who she is or what she is doing here.
19th Galena, 1059 Late Summer
It seems there was a problem with the Blood Bowl. Someone forgot to flip the switch to raise the bridge connecting it to the outside. I only just now learned about this, unfortunately because a goblin snatcher tried to get into the fort this way.
The goblin got away, but I ordered the bridge raised right away to keep this from happening again. However, right after the bridge went up another goblin snatcher was found!
With no easy escape route, the goblin had no choice but to flee deeper into the fort. Goden decided to cut it off in the hallway leading out of the blood bowl.
A lone thief versus an experienced fortress guard? The outcome was obvious.
...or so I thought. Instead of crushing the goblin's skull Goden instead fell to the ground crippled with pain. What the fuck.
Fortunately, Gonzo20 arrived quickly and gave the thief a proper "greeting".
So aside from Goden getting her arm broken somehow everything seems fine. Though I have to admit I am a bit worried. I mean, normally a wave of goblin snatchers is followed up by an ambush.
SHIT!
Uhhh, okay! I'll just call everyone inside and then figure out what to do from there-
WHY DO THEY ALWAYS PICK THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME TO ARRIVE?!?
23rd Galena, 1059, Late Summer
The goblin ambush squad was making a beeline for the humans. I really wasn't sure what to do at this point. I decided that the humans had to be rescued though, as it certainly wouldn't look very good if we just left them to die.
So I sent the military out to fight the goblins. There wasn't really any strategy or planning involved. We didn't have time for that. The whole situation was more of a mess than the incident with the ettin last month.
Fortunately, humans aren't careless. They guard all of their caravans. When the guards noticed the approaching goblins they immediately began attacking them. To their credit they were doing a pretty good job, but the goblins were determined and soon began to wreak havoc.
It was pure chaos. It was hard to tell exactly who was winning with all the limbs and blood flying around.
To be honest I'm not even sure we helped much. By the time we got there most of the goblins were either crippled or dead. The humans were not happy, to say the least. They'd suffered many injuries and casualties as well. So they decided this wasn't worth the trouble and left. Well, everyone except for the human that had arrived earlier.
She claims to be the human law-giver, even though she's a completely different person with no relation to the previous one. I wasn't aware humans changed leaders so quickly.
28th Galena, 1059 Late Summer
Well this law-giver seems to be exactly like the last one. She grabbed me, told me we had many important things to discuss, and then dragged me into my office for a meeting.
Where she then proceeded to do nothing but stare at me the whole time.
Is this standard human policy? Do all their meetings go like this? It certainly seems strange to me, but it does keep things nice and simple. I wish my meetings with the outpost liaison were this quick.
And then she left. She went down into the deep roads, despite the bridge being down, giving her a perfectly safe way out of the fort. Oh god, what if that's the reason there's a new law-giver? What if the last one got lost or killed in the deep roads, and they had to get a new one a result? Dammit, I should've warned her! I'm so dumb!
Oh and one of the forge masters has been possessed, further delaying work. I need a drink.
