Let's Play - Leaflocke Challenge Chapter 2: Tit for Tat

I enjoy playing Pokèmon. I'm interested in completing a Nuzlocke Challenge. Doing a Let's Play seems intriguing.

And so I had a thought - why not combine the three?

But before I began such an endeavor, I thought I'd rustle the bushes and see if anyone was interesting in watching me faff about while playing Pokèmon.

The Game is afoot!

But before you, dear reader, would commit to reading about some random person's exploits in a videogame, you would likely have some questions. Preemptively, here are the answers.

Who are you?
Zen Toombs, at your service. Just someone looking to entertain themselves and hopefully provide others with some measure of amusement.

What's Pokemon?
It's a videogame first released in the mid-90's. It's premise is simple - there are over 150 types of monsters roaming the world. Your job as a 12 year old is to jam these monsters into small balls and have them fight to the death.

It's fun for the whole family!

What's a Nuzlocke Challenge?

Spoiler: Glad you asked! For reference, I'll be using these basic rules here:

With only slight alteration.
...For one, I will not catch repeat pokèmon, nor will I catch a pokèmon that is a later evolution of one I have already caught. If the first pokèmon I see in a given zone is a duplicate of one I already own, I can keep looking until I find one I don't own.
...For two, I will not release a pokèmon after it faints. I will instead put it in a box that I will name "Graveyard".
...For three, I WILL catch a shiny pokèmon if it appears. If it isn't the first pokèmon in a given zone or is a duplicate, I'll catch it anyways and chuck it in a box somewhere. Let's be honest, it's all shiney and stuff.

How often will you update?
As often as I can. I am a student, and I'm currently juggling work and summer courses. But if you all are interested, I'll update as often as I can manage. With luck, it would hopefully around once per week.

Why LeafGreen? Why not another pokèmon game?
Well, I've already beaten Red, Blue, Gold, Ruby and Sapphire so I didn't want to play those again. I also wanted to play something I was semi-familiar with because Nuzlocke Challenges can be quite difficult, so the remakes of the first generation seemed like the way to go.

How are you going to do this?
I'm using a fancy emulator to play the game (shh, it's a secret) and I'll be using image capture for the Let's Play. After snagging the images I'll add something that resembles witty commentary for your amusement.
The awesome person that is [user]Caramel Frappe[/user] will be assisting me with photoshop when needed, as my photoshop-fu skills are not very effective.

Reader Imput?
Well, that wasn't quite a question, but I'm accepting votes for the main character's gender and name, Rival's name, starting pokèmon and starter nickname. I'm also accepting nickname ideas for other pokèmon.
Now that I've started, I'll accepting ideas for names of the pokemon I catch. Just post any ideas that you have, and I'll pick the ones that amuse me the most.

Kinda sorta. I'm using an emulator, and I'll be doing image capture shenanigans. I'll also add something resembling witty commentary for fun and amusements.

OT: Crap yeah, I love Let's Play threads, especially by people like yourself. If you can, PM me whenever you do an update please cause I suck at keeping track. I am also doing an LP and I message everyone on the member's list whenever an update is up.

Yeah, I was planning on doing that but I didn't put it in the OP. Putting it in now!

Starter Pokemon: Bulbasaur. Last two Pokemon LP's I followed, the person went with Charmander, and the other a Squirrel. This time the green guy deserves a chance to shine.

I've actually never begun with the Grass Starter, so that should be interesting

Definitely interested - I love to see more LPs here on The Escapist anyway, and Nuzlockes are always awesome.

Protagonist's Gender: Female.

Protagonist's Name: Penny. No reason, just a name.

Rival: Steve. You can't take a rival seriously if their name's Steve. Well, I can't.

Starter Pokemon: Bulbasaur. Its always been my least favourite Gen I starter, so it'd be interesting to see if you can show off how good it can be.

Pokemon Nickname: Yggdrasil for Bulbasaur, Surt for Charmander, Aegir for Squirtle.

Good read. I quite liked the conversation idea, that was an interesting way of presenting it - most LPs I've seen of Pokemon tend to be a single-person narrative, so that was pretty cool.

Oh, yeah, not sure if it's just me/Chrome, but in your narrative we see:

"you've never had a POK荏N battle before, have you?"

Might be worth checking to make sure the Escapist supports whatever symbols you're putting in there.

Funny, I literally just started a nuzlocke run

Couple of things I'd suggest though are posting a link the OP to the nuzlocke comic to show where you are getting the idea from (http://pettynuzlockelg.smackjeeves.com/archive/).

Also starting with bulbasaur will ensure your LP will last longer (since you can't be guaranteed pokemon that can beat the first few gyms without excessive training)

And consider giving your pokemon personalities, so if they die it will hit the viewers harder (I know charmander died before you had a chance to develop one, but for future)

Finally use the potion in the PC to ensure a win in the rival battle so you don't game over off the bat haha

Appologies, I planned on updating tomorrow but my schedule became hectic. Finishing up my first round of summer courses and moving into a new apartment will do that to you.
