So according to some guy, Ryse was supposed to be the Xbox answer to God of War. Now let me get this out of the way. I love the part where he grouped up with a bunch of soldiers and created the legendary Roman shield wall. I wish most of the game would be you and a bunch of soldiers using tactics to defeat the enemy rather than you vs a ton of enemies on your own.

You see, I think that somewhere in the beginning of the game, probably after that battle that was previewed, the protagonist will be ambushed or betrayed or something and will be the only surviving member of his squadron. So instead of shield walls and whatnot, it'd be a linear walk through a bunch of enemies that you quick time event kill them.

About the combat. There is no denying that it had a buttload of QTEs. These are basically the finishing moves that God of War has, but with more QTEs and such I think more animations and whatnot. But the rest of combat feels...meh. I can't decide if they want a strategic combat pace like Dark Souls or a fast and fluid God of War one. All I saw was two or three hits on a goon, then X and whatever else prompt to finish them in a QTE.

...The graphics looks nice I guess. Escapists, what are your initial opinions on Ryse: Son of Rome?

I'm not being a spiteful **** when I say this, but I didn't watch the trailer, I just heard people say it was similar to God of War (not a terrible series, but I'm sick to death of it) with more QTE's.

That pretty much shut me off instantly.

Same here.

Now if there was good squad-based, tactical play throughout, as part of a large open battlefield, making it God of War meets Dynasty Warriors, then I'm interested.
But hack-slash-QTE, no thanks.

Do you have a source for this? It's really disappointing if true.

That is what I expect will happen, just like I expect Riley the dog to be offed in a cutscene.

It looks real fuckin' boring that's for sure.
Nice and pretty but boring as all hell. Too QTE focused and doesn't seem flashing enough to keep it interesting compared to DmC or God of War.

Looks gorgeous but the combat looks awful and is only on Xbox. I'll just watch a full playthrough on youtube and be done with it.

Yeah, pretty much everything you guys said, though I do hope for some kind of squad based tactitioning.
Kinda Ghost Recon style.
I know it's not going to happen but a man can dream.

Well it's Heavy Rain gameplay with romans, also flail support for those days when you just feel like monkeying around.

I could hardly come up with anything I'd want less.

The game didn't blow me away by any means but we have to few non RTS games sett in the Roman era so I welcome this game with open arms.

GoW has grown stale for me, what do I want to do with a version of that that's slower, has no giant mythological creatures to shove my sword into, and, riddled with QTEs?

Tell me the game has some deep story and RPG elements and none linear and I might grow a little interested.

The idea of more realistic spectacle fighter really clicks with me and demo has shown some nifty little ideas, like making a shield wall and giving an order to archers to cover you. But holly hell those QTEs... TOO MUCH! Like the moment where enemy is already wounded and on is knees and you have to QTE to finish him. And what will happen if you won't press a button?! He will fucking miss?!

I'm guessing he'd abort the move to think of a witty one liner.

It's been said that there are no penalties for missing a QTE according to an earlier post in this thread.

More like a witty one linear

Alright I'm sorry that was awful.

Cry engine. I'm pretty sure its a license requirement to stick a random "ry" in there.

Really liked the look of the gameplay, Not so hot on the QTE's but I could live with them I don't really mind them too much

Yeah Destructoid's guy wasn't too keen on it, I think it being adapted out of the firey pit of Kinect-only has left its marks. Also why didn't the guy doing the stage demo get his guys to raise their shields when the arrows were coming? That really bugged me.

Actually that's a very good point. Why didn't Crytek call it cRyse?

I liked Ryse - aka QTEs: The Game - better when it was called God of War. It had a lot more inspiration behind it then, too.
