Let's talk about tattoos

Until a couple of months ago I never seriously thought about getting a tattoo, but with my graduation coming up in a couple of weeks time, I'm thinking about getting a tattoo somewhere inconspicuous to commemorate that. My plan is to get a laurel wreath with a graduation cap in the gap at the top with my course and study years written inside. It might still be a few months before I get it though. Firstly because I can't afford one right now and secondly because I'd like to slim down a bit first.

I don't have any tattoos, and I never will.

As for whether I think differently of people with tattoos, it depends on the tattoos in question. People with big, immature drawings (skulls, fire, lighting, tits or the like) indelibly etched onto their skin will naturally elicit considerably less respect from me than someone without tattoos, or just someone with a more subtle, not so prominent one.
Of all the "elicit less respect from" notions I've seen in this thread, this one burns hottest. That being said, I believe the minute I have to justify anything to someone I feel that I've already lost. That being said, I'll do my best to raise some concerns.

This attitude of judging anyone before actually knowing them is what baffles me. I see it all the time though, especially when my tattoos are covered up, someone will look at someone with an inordinate amount of tattoos or tattoos of skulls, fire, wings, symbols etc and immediately pass judgement. Various folks in this thread have used phrases that call that individuals life choices into question.

Who are you to judge, and how would really know how their life is going?

Someone with eccentric tattoos or mode of dress isn't wearing signage that indicates their status in life. That person that you respect less may be doing quite a bit better and be quite a bit happier than you assume.

That stated, stereotypes and generalizations are not without precedent. A lot of people with tattoos like those are slaves to trends, or really don't think for themselves in the respect of deeper meaning. It's disappointing that they are only skin deep (no pun intended), but it's their choice.

I just don't understand why people immediately disparage people when they see something like that. It's not "Oh I wonder what the story behind that tattoo is.", it's "Sheesh real creative there, I bet that idiot is winning at life."

It's sincerely disappointing that so many people seem to have the self-appointed right to just flagrantly turn their noses up at others, neglecting the fact that they hold no more station in life than any other.

Remember, your time is fleeting and even the most powerful king kneels before the kingdom of worms eventually. I'm not trying to be incisive, but please just try to keep an open mind, particularly when people prove your prejudices right over and over again.

So Escapist, what are your thoughts on tattoos? Do you have one? If so, tell us about it. Has your tattoo ever affected your life in any noticeable way?

Furthermore, does someone having a tattoo affect your judgement of them?

Personally, I've always wanted to get three lions tattooed on me, but not on my arms or legs or anywhere it's immediately apparent. (I'm a sucker for national pride)
Tattoos are awesome. I have two. They are awesome. People sometimes judge me, but fuck them. I just find the entire topic funny. Dunno why people like others mandate what they want to get on their bodies, do what you want.

Here they are.

I don't like tattoos, they just don't appeal to me. I mean sure, they can make you look badass if you are a maori warrior or something.

The only one I have thought was acceptable was the red dragon tattoo. I don't know why.

I feel sorry for women who decide to get tattoos on their lower back. The back is such a great spot to use as a canvas for tattooing, yet it is so commonly viewed in a negative light... I do not have any tattoos, however I am still unable to come up with a proper design. If I end up getting a simple tattoo simply to "try it out" and see how I like it, I'll probably get an anchor of some sort. Possibly the astrological symbol for Uranus since it is the planet I was born under or whatever and I like the symbol for it as well.
