I've almost completed HR on challenge difficulty, and just wondering, what play style did people take? Weapons loadout? Augs?

For me, a decent mix of stealth and combat. I upgraded hacking and dermal armour quickly, but then realised that the cloak can be very handy despite its inefficiency. It's not hard to sneak by enemies using short bursts of invisibility to go from hiding place to hiding place. Also bought typhoon upgrade later in the game, but I short-sightedly discarded a lot of the ammo available earlier on.

Weapons wise, a fully upgraded 10mm pistol - with silencer, armour piercing, laser sights, and 2X damage upgrade is pretty amazing. Something of a budget sniper rifle, which is just as well, since actual sniper and crossbow ammo is so rare. The machine pistol is also quite good w/silencer + laser sights but it lacks the armour piercing upgrade. Oh yeah, and there's also an explosive rounds upgrade which turns the revolver into an airburst grenade launcher. Awesome. It's a shame the crossbow ammo is so rare too, or else it would have been one of my favourite weapons. EMP grenades are absolutely essential in defeating robots, a well aimed throw underneath the legs is an instakill. I've also found gas grenades are pretty lethal, and two are enough to clear a wide open space of hostiles or kill a compulsory boss.

The hacking minigame is also surprisingly fun, I hack into things just for the sake of it.

Also, which Deus Ex protagonist do you prefer? Jensen seemed to be a good predecessor to JC Denton. He's not nearly as angsty as some people seem to make him out to be.

I took all non-combat augs and never bothered to upgrade anything else really. Wasn't that hard even with one battery and no dermal plating.

I balanced mine out a bit, but I go for hacking, strength, & capacity upgrades quickly, followed by upgrades that improve overall movement in the levels. I'm more about avoiding firefights if possible, and being ready to unleash metal-jacketed hell when they do happen, or turn the enemies weapons into their liability & stealing everything in sight. I never really used the dermal plating upgrades too often, since they never really did shit in boss battles.

I liked to carry my 10mm Pistol, fully upgraded, since that's like having hack mode on. I usually bring the Assault Rifle, upgraded as well in case things get hairy, along with the Stun Gun & other weapons. I usually carry a shitload of grenades in case the bodybag train has to roll. I don't really use the Typhoon much; I usually use it as a get-out-of-CQB card since I don't want to waste energy bars with hand-to-hand moves too much.

And I like Jensen. He's got that ex-SWAT, ex-terrorist-attack-now-Robocop-with-skin bearing on him, even if his voice was a little too subdued. In fact, he kinda reminds me of Keanu Reeves from The Matrix a bit in a way with his voice.

Off-topic, somewhat:

I've wondered if there's a mod that lets you play as a street criminal in the game; being an augmented street thug battling with cops & gangbangers, while selling drugs, augs, guns, & whatever else could've worked. Maybe as its own singleplayer, maybe as a multiplayer thing as well, but it could've been interesting. Because the gangs always fascinated me; namely, where the hell do you go to such ghetto-ass augmentation work done in the projects.

Well I played on hardest, which was piss easy up to the boss fights where I died 20+ times.
Augs - only hacking basics to remove the silly randomness, after that I left it all be so it wont get even easier.
Weapons - well I carried them all at one point or another because I have loot OCD, but I only used the stun gun. Except for the bosses where all logics fail and we are suddenly in call a duty.

I was really happy to get another Deus Ex game, but looking back I think we appreciate it simply due to the lack of such games, it's all gone so shallow that this poorly designed game is our only glimmer of hope. ( Yes I am exaggerating )

I think I prefer Adam Jensen over JC Denton as a character. He seems far more grounded in reality and much more relatable as a human being.

Personally, I prefer stealth augmentations over combat ones. In Deus Ex: Human Revolution Combat's all well and good, but I find the game far more fun playing it as a taser-totin' smart arse.

Whereas, in Deus Ex one - I prefer to use tech/combat augmentations. Though I will still fight human enemies with non-lethal weaponary.

I'm most of the way through (I think) and have got through very well specialising in hacking. When I started off, I gunned down quite a few people, but now I try and get the Ghost XP bonus at the end of each mission - invisibility helps a lot.

In the way of weapons, I use a pretty much maxed out assault rifle with laser sight and silencer but prefer to use the tranquilliser rifle or silenced and almost fully upgraded 10mm pistol if I can't use the tranq rifle.

Bosses are never a problem because I have fully upgraded typhoon which kills everything in 1 or 2 hits.

I think you mean Deus Ex 2.

And J.C. Denton is waiting to cap anyone who says otherwise.
Uhm... Deus Ex: Invisible War says hi.

OT: I am loving the first one for PC (havent finished it yet :p) and got the third one for xbox 360 for christmas.
I am yet to play it though but Adam seems really cool, but I doubt he can be as wonderfully cheesy as J.C! xD
there was no invisible war, it was just drugs in the drinking water.
and people who keep spreading the lie may just get a visit from JC...with a silenced sniper rifle

ot: non-murder-spree and i mainly used takedowns and the silenced sniper rifle if an enemy was too far away. i up a lot of upgrades in my pistol but hardly ever used it since i had the typhoon for bosses

I tried stealthier earlier with nonlethal weapons but I ended up finding it boring after about the sixteenth vent, so I started to upgrade a magmum and 10mm pistol. For about the last 50% of the game, I found it much more fun when I got the increased sprint and all the armor upgrades, dashing from place to place in big shootouts. I still prefered the non lethal takedowns as wrist knives are silly!

I went with all the hacking and social upgrades first off, because taking everyone down with stealth was fairly easy and fun anyway. Then I pretty much just bought random things I never used, but were undeniably badass. That would be Icarus, Typhoon and cloaking, mainly. Oh, and double stealth take-downs, which I actually did use. I had a fully upgraded pistol which I rarely used, and a fully upgraded assault rifle which I don't think I used once. I was always saving it just in case I needed it in the next fight, which I never did.

Adam Jenson is my favourite protagonist, because he was the only one who seemed to have any personality at all. I thought the others were just featureless and bland, and not really characters in their own right at all.

Also, am I the only person who actually liked Invisible War? In fact I'd even go so far as to say I preferred it to the first Deus Ex, simply because it gave me some actual choice when it mattered. (Screw you Paul Denton, I wanted to stay with UNATCO. And screw you game developers, I escaped from Gunther's trap fair and square, despite how you made him invincible and capable of one shotting me. What did I get out of this? An empty, unfinished level where nothing happens. "Player choice" my ass.)

I enjoyed it at first, but found myself bored with it the more I played. The story is pish and the gameplay is so repetitive, especially if you're going 100% stealth/non lethal. The boss fights felt so out of place when compared to the rest of the game, more so if like I said you were going for the stealthy, non-lethal achievments.
It's a shame, I was really looking forward to this game. It's one of very few games I've played most of the way through and just went "meh" with and haven't played it since.
The new Syndicate looks to be what Deus Ex should have been, however this is only from the few videos I've seen. fingers crossed EA doesn't balls it up.

This was my game of the year, easily. As soon as I got over his Batman meets Steven Seagal voice, I really enjoyed Adam Jensen's character; I've not been this into a character's plight since that poor bastard from Shadow of the Colossus.

I loved how the missions actually made sense in the context of the game, as opposed to every other mission-based game where it was just 'go here; collect X' as a means of moving the story along, and the conversations relied on you using wit and logic as opposed to the random chance employed by games like Fallout 3.

The boss fights were my only major complaint with the game, as they were complete bullshit forcing you into cheap run and gun situations, but it was a insignificant complaint compared to how much genuine fun I had with the rest of the game.

My first playthrough was a pacifist run on Give Me Deus Ex difficulty. Weapons were limited to non-lethal takedowns and the stun gun for the vast majority of the game (never really used the tranquilliser rifle much), with a fully upgraded 10mm pistol and various grenades/mines for the bosses.

Aug-wise, I specialised in hacking and social, edging into stealth as well nearer the end (the cloak was really useful).

DXHR (somehow i hestistate to call it "the third") accepts equally any kind of gameplay. It doesn't matter if you're stealthy ninja or bloodthirsty killer. As long as job the is done the world doesn't care about the way it was done. So, at first i thought about recreating original JC and going easy on my enemies, but later on i've found this approach boring.

So i threw away all stealthy equipment, armed myself with heavy weapons and became death, the destroyer of lives. From this point it was like pressing fast-forward key. :)

As for mods. A bit of this a bit of that. Flexibility is the keyword. I value mods enhancing hand to hand combat most. The scenes of Adam taking care of his enemies that way are wonderful. :)

I like Invisible War very much. In terms of scenario it is rather weak, but the gameplay is quite nice and challenging since some mods exclude other. :)

Annd now I've finished it!

Decided to ditch my useless-without-ammo submachine gun and grab all the heavy rifle + plasma ammo I could find instead. Zhao met a nasty end. What a rotten way to die. Though it was merciful to the drones. I chose Sarif's ending, and I was not disappointed.

I thought social enhancer upgrades would have been a bit of a cop out. It was more fun to manipulate the few social battles there were manually.

Didn't like the combat rifle or the shotgun much. Did away with them early on, as well as anything else that didn't really have enough ammo availability compared to other weapons. Sadly, that included the crossbow. PEPS has nominally rare ammo, but each shot is powerful enough to save for boss fights. A fully upgraded 10mm pistol is pretty Godly.

Adam Jensen had a lot more personality whilst being a badass (depending on the player), and JC Denton had the sheer badass factor but less of a personality. In all, I would like to see more protagonists along the mold of Jensen, really.

Yeah. Good point. I would like to try invisible war, even if it has a reputation as the weakest DX game. The weapons look pretty cool.
