Out of all three? One Piece is my favorite, best characters and arcs imo. I have read up to the latest chapter and it continues to be enjoyable.

That no one in their right mind considers those three anime to be the "big three" anything.

Yeesh. You should list the titles you plan to talk about in the subject so people with good taste who dislike the three shows you mentioned can avoid this thread.

**shakes head in disappointment and leaves thread**
Regardless of your personal tastes, the fact remains that these three shows are still wildly popular. As I mentioned in my OP, I've dabbled in two of them but didn't care much for them either...but guess what? That's exactly what this topic is for. In fact, posts like yours are exactly what this topic is for: clearly you despise these shows and to be honest I can easily understand why. I would like to remind you, however, that your personal tastes don't make you superior in any way to other people with differing tastes.

So thanks for stopping by and participating. :p

First as a primer: here's the inspiration for this topic:

Yes yes, old youtube video is old. Still, I think it does bring up a fun topic of discussion.

To start things off, I'll go ahead and declare myself as a non-fan of these series. The problem that I had with these shows is that they never frickin' end (exaggeration). They just keep going and going and going and oh look it's another 30-50 episode filler arc. I had my run with both Naruto and Bleach (never got into One Piece), but I just got impatient. It takes 60 frickin' episodes to finish a conversation and two fights (more exaggeration). I won't deny that I REALLY liked the fight scenes in Bleach, but just when you thought the story was FINALLY going to get to the good stuff: insert filler-arc for three months!

Naruto was decent, I mean who doesn't like ninjas, right? But it suffered from the same problem: it just dragged on and on and on. And really I just ended up coming to the conclusion that I liked shows that have a decent run-time (maybe 30-60 episodes) but ultimately have a very clear and defined end. That's why shows like Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: SAC appeal to me. They don't need to stretch themselves out for 10 million episodes just to tell a story that another anime could tell in 70 episodes.

That, and I just came to the realization that Naruto and Bleach were just DBZ with ninjas and death-gods, respectively. :p

So, my fellow Escapists, what are your thoughts on The Big Three?
Heck, that's why I like anime more than normal television. Anime typically end, whereas the average t.v. show just blunders on until it becomes self parody. Those shows do the same, and I lost interest quickly. It's sad when a show entirely devoted to action is really boring. Evangellion and Serial Experiment Lain were 90% talking, and they were way more interesting than the big three.

They're all right, I guess. Not really my thing but if you like it, whatev. Don't hate 'em, and I'll watch if they're on. They're basically all I'm able to watch, since I can't stream or download anything on my piss-poor connection. I have to rely on TV for anime. Which basically means the only anime I get is from Toonami.

*sigh* You lucky people and your fast internets...

Watched One Piece on and off a couple years ago. It was fun enough, but seemed a bit directionless. It's pretty good to pass the time, but I wouldn't call myself a huge fan. Was thinking of giving it another try, though.

Naruto I watched quite a bit of for lack of anything better to do. To be completely honest, hated every minute of it. The humor fell flat, the characters were all unlikable, and the fighting was yawn-inducing for me. Boredom was pretty much the only reason I kept watching.

As for Bleach... haven't seen a single episode of it. The art-style kind of irks me, but if I come across an episode I'll probably give it a look. Being a gamer has trained me not to care enough about visuals to let it get in the way of a good story.

Actually, I don't despise them. Well, except for Naruto. And yes, they are wildly popular... this year. There are, however, shows whose popularity a few years ago easily dwarfed them. Someone mentioned Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. I'm not a huge Trigun fan, but it is a lot closer to being a "big three" than Once Piece.

Sailor Moon and Neon Genesis Evangelion both had fanbases that make any of those "big three" look like a joke.

My criticism wasn't to you (aside from not putting the three titles in your topic, which I think you should) but for the person who called these the "big three" in the first place.

I used to watch One Piece but the pace is fucking excruciating. Takes like 20 fucking episodes to finish a fight. I gave it up because I just couldn't take it anymore. It's a shame because I do like the world and characters.

As for Bleach I enjoyed the Soul Society Arc but didn't really bother after that.

Ultimate is just shit. I can?t even describe my distaste for this self-indulgent, narcissistic and pretentious piece of crap. It is clear case of trying to force substance by making every character outlandish psychotic and over the top yet it means ultimately little.
For me Ultimate was a piece of crap because of massive tonal inconsistency with slapstick-humor feeling so incredibly forced.

For just how dark/evil Hellsing can get, the countless attempts at slapstick comedy (especially with Seras) just kept booting me out of the whole thing.

There are way too many anime to list "the big 3" but if we divide them in to classics vs more recent products...Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell and Rurouni Kenshin are my big 3 of classics.

Well wouldn't that....wouldn't that make them the current big three then? :p

I'm certainly not going to argue the point that there aren't anime out there that have been just as popular. Hell, Nostalgia Critic's most recent video was a discussion on why Sailor Moon was so unbelievably popular (great NC episode, by the way). But these are the three that are currently the most popular, though even now there's shows that are gaining more and more popularity as these three shows are beginning their slide on into anime history.

If I were to make a list of my personal All Time Big 3, it'd be Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin (probably my favorite of all time), and Bobobo-bobo-Bobobo. Though to be fair, with Bobobo it's more for the manga than the show...I don't care what anyone else says or thinks of it, that series brings me to tears with laughter.

Yeah, I hate watching anime where it's been going on for over 100 episodes, and STILL going.
One Piece has been going on for over 600 episodes, STILL hasn't told a full story yet.
It's virtually inaccessible to newcomers.
Not a fan of any, I only watch shit that's finished, so I can actually know if it's ever going to end.
Unless it's Attack on Titan.

I love Bleach and it's my absolute favorite anime series ever.. and Naruto's pretty good too( though there are too many filler arcs that aren't always good. Bleach has filler too but I've never disliked the filler on Bleach never really thought of One Piece as a big anime/manga series.. i mean it's good from what little I've seen of it, but never as good as other anime/manga...I've always though of Bleach, Naruto and Neon Genesis Evangelion as the big 3 anime/manga series.. all 3 series have anime fans either loving or hating the shows.. or sometimes having in between feelings for the series.. and all three have huge follows and shit loads of merchandise too.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the big three and wait patiently each week to get my fix-they were my introduction to my now favourite form of entertainment and I love them for it.

Yes they have problems and yes said problems can be severe in some cases and I can understand why people would hate it but still I just can't bring myself to have negative feeling about them ^_^.

I watched most of naruto up to the point that the fillers got ridiculously long then I kind of got back into shipuuden before dropping it completely. I read all 3 routinely but anime wise I haven't been engrossed by a series since gurren lagann. 90's early 2000 anime puts most stuff I've seen recently to shame.

I never got into Bleach or One Piece. Naruto was enough for me. I only want to keep track of one long-running anime at a time, thank you. I've enjoyed Naruto mostly, although there have been some rough spots. The fillers I didn't mind too much because it allowed characters OTHER than Naruto to do stuff. Whenever Tenten or Hinata got their own episode, I was very pleased. Also, seeing some of the fight scenes from the manga brought to life was really enjoyable.

And then the Great Ninja War arc started. It started off strong, with Naruto being NOWHERE near the battle and the rest of the cast having to actually fight their own battles. The anime especially ran wild here, making up their own fights with enemies that only had one or two panels in the manga. I loved it. And then, when Naruto does show up, Hinata finally gets some recognition and things were really looking up.

And then stuff happened. I don't want to spoil it for people who aren't reading the new chapters from Japan, but let's just say Naruto had officially entered DBZ territory. Characters who were treated as gods are now being utterly destroyed for the simple reason to establish that a new character is the strongest character ever!!! And of course, stupid left-over plot threads are finally being brought back to life (go home Sasuke, you're drunk) and the manga has decided to just focus on Naruto again. It's getting rather annoying now, especially considering that for a brief while I got to see what the show could really be like if more characters were involved.

The three of them are being made to drag thier feet so they stay relevant, and to make as much money as possible off of merchandise sales.

Its not that their writers are bad at it, at least i hope not, its that their publishers wont let them move onto anything else, so they run out of ideas. This is particularly prevailant in Naruto, which can only resort to serial escalation to advance the plot to any significant degree.

Those shows aint got nothing on Berserk. It (the manga) has been going on for like 10+ years now.

For freaks sake... FINISH IT ALREADY!
Ohhh god don't remind me it has been like a year and we got maybe 3 chapters. I can't wait forever god damn it!

OT: I have watched or read ALOT of all three and I agree mostly with this video except the stuff about One Piece. OP has very little filler in it and it is far better written than the other two over all. The only problem with OP is the pacing which can put people off which I totally understand. It is also the longest but I don't count that as a issue inherently cause it is subjective as to whether that is even a true flaw. Don't get me wrong OP is far from perfect and doesn't hold a candle to the real greats but it is the best of the top 3 and on a personal level I enjoy it greatly but that is a biased preference.

Gods, I haven't watched the Anime of these three in ages. Not even One Piece, which is my personal favourite, so forgive me if I sound misinformed, but my opinion stands based on the Manga.

Bleach lost my loyalty as well as interest a long while back. The beginning was good, and the Soul Society arc was excellent, but after that, I couldn't help but feel that the story lost both momentum and character. Ichigo lost the spark that made me like him at first, and from what I've seen lately, that troublemaker spark is completely gone by now, and the story has become what a story never should become: anonymous. The manga would have ended two arcs ago, if not for the fans' whining as well as pure milking. The quality of the story has only lowered since the Soul Society arc, which made me stop reading it altogether.
Bottom line, I find that Bleach lost its soul a long time ago. I stopped reading after the Hueco Mundo arc, so I can't say I have much of a developed opinion on Bleach compared to the other two :/

Naruto does still however hold my loyalty somewhat, if only because it seems that the light at the end of the tunnel finally seems visible. Kishimoto has, in all honesty, caused a big-ass mess with his story. There are much too many holes in the logic as well as the plot tor me to properly stomach, and it prevents me from fully enjoying the series. It would seem Kihimoto just has too many ideas in the air at once, but can't hold onto half of them. Then he seems to change some details halfway through. Want an example? Why, take the Shukaku for one. Originally, he was said to be a sand priest that had absorbed the soul of a demon, or something along those lines. Now look where that went.
But what pisses me off even more is that when a character, and Naruto himself in particular, finally seems to have developed a little, that progress is stomped out two chapters later. Kishimoto is much too afraid to disrupt the status quo, and the relationships between characters remains much too static to be realistic in any way. It bores me, honestly. The fights are much better done, but the power scaling is much too erratic. One character seems incredibly strong one arc, but a simple scrub the next. People who would seem to have been nerfed immensely in comparison to the main characters from sheer story progression seems to somehow still pose a significant threat, despite how they by all that is logic should be classed as scrubs by then. Really, don't make the boss from the second real arc into a big-ass boss in the last one. It just doesn't make any sense.
In short, I just want Kishimoto to make his damn mind up. Linear progression, Kishimoto, this is a Manga series, not an Elder Scrolls game.

One Piece on the other hand, does what the other two does not and does it brilliantly. It sets a clear goal from the start: Raftel, (the last island on the Grand Line and the most probable location of the One Piece, which is the treasure they're looking for,) and hasn't strayed since. The story of One Piece tells us about their journey there, simple as that. The longer the characters travel, the more people they meet, the more they discover, and the more intricate the story as well as the world around them becomes. Yet despite this intricacy, Oda never EVER loses track of any one thread, of any one detail. Something mentioned briefly book thirteen might become a major plot point, thirty books later. And no, I'm not exaggerating. That actually happened.
Oda isn't afraid to be outrageous and/or over-the-top. He writes his story with enough self distance for me to take it just seriously enough to appreciate the humour, yet allow me to still be deeply invested in the story. In all honesty, One Piece is as I see it the only one of the big three that hasn't lost track of its original genre, its characters or its soul.
Perhaps most impotantly of all, the characters that we have followed from book one still are the same. They have matured, and learned more of the world, yes, but Luffy is still the same outgoing, spontaneous, ever hungry, adventure-loving Luffy I've followed so long. Zoro is still the lazy, amazingly loyal oaf he's always been. Nami is still a money-hoarding, violent control freak, and so on. The core of the characters are still very much the same, where this core seems to have warped and/or faded in the case of Naruto and Bleach. A story is about the characters, not the other way around, and Oda remembers that. It shows.
It's really a pity that so many judges One Piece for its cartoonish artstyle. The Manga series is and has been the best selling Manga series in Japan for around a decade and as far as I know, still hasn't seen any decline. It's really a beautiful and surprisingly deep story, if one only takes the time to look beyond the decievingly simplistic surface. ;)

But then again, I don't read a Manga series for the fights. When I read, I do it for the characters and the story, which is likely why One Piece fits me so much better than the others. Yet in the end, it's all a matter of taste.

I frist saw Naruto. I liked it at first, but I slowly started to dislike it. Don't know why, i just was that impressed. I use to really like One Piece, but after the whole are with the Dessert Kingdom, I just got tired of it. Finally, I never got into Bleach. I liked how it started, I.E, the first episode. But, after that, I don't know, I just wasn't into it. So, I just don't like them. I respect them, but I don't like them.

I've seen a few episodes of Bleach, and from what I've seen I'm really interested in it. It's on my list of stuff to watch, but first I have to get caught up on One Piece, then I'll probably watch a shorter anime before I begin Bleach (I'm thinking either Another or Le Chevalier D'Eon)

I didn't think I'd like One Piece as much as I do, and in the beginning I wasn't really feeling it but once they met Usopp I really got into it and I intend to get caught up on the 600+ episodes asap (episode 294 is loading in another tab as I type this), and it's pretty much the same story for Naruto, though I gotta say Shippuden is at least twice as good as the original
