I've been playing a lot of the Mass Effect series lately, if you asked my friends they'd probably say too much. In fact, within the first two weeks of having ME2 I played it about 80 hours. Needless to say I've seen many forums about the Mass Effect series, and that is why I'm choosing it for this purpose.

I think that The Escapist is the perfect place to have a legitimate discussion on the characters of the Mass Effect games. This is because The Escapist seems to have less trolls than most forums. I've chosen this topic because there is a lot of arguing on why certain characters are liked and/or disliked.

I'm going to start of with Tali. This is because she is both one of my favorite characters and a highly disputed one. I don't know if you'd consider me what is called a "Talimancer," because, while I like Tali, I am also tolerant of other's opinions.

The reasons I like Tali are because she is funny, smart, cute, and courageous. I have seen several reasons for people not liking her, some being; she does not have a very developed character, or, she is quick to jeopardize her health to get with somebody she has nothing in common with. To which my answers are: she does have, in my opinion, quite a bit of character development, she changes quite a bit from the young Quarian helping you on her pilgrimage to the full adult joining you to save the galaxy, but only after her duties to the Migrant Fleet are done; and whether or not she has much in common with Shepard depends on how you play the game, my Shepard had quite a lot in common with her, not only being tech oriented but fighting against unbeatable odds to save not only they're own species but the galaxy, she is one of few Quarians, like Shepard is one of few Human's, who put the galaxy's needs above just their own species.

TL;DR I'm trying to have an intelligent discussion about Tali or other characters from the Mass Effect series.

EDIT: Added another sentence on the end and fixed a wording error.

I would not call that a good comparison. Shepard doesn't really have a lot of choice in the matter of saving the world, s/he is almost forced to do it.

Point taken.
True the characters choices are limited to how the story plays out.
If I may rephrase: Her personality is quite similar to my version of Commander Shepard's, or more accurately, my personality. It is the closest comparison I can make from a video game character to what I would look for in a woman.

I haven't played ME2 as much as you, but if you would gather up all the "Tali-moments" in the game and analyze the dialogue spoken by her...how much can you really say about her without projecting...that is, engaging in unreasonable inference (seeing/ believing things that simply aren't there)?

I say this because I believe that a gamer rarely ever gets a clear picture/ view of what's inside a character's head and/ or heart...if it's not spoken about in a clear fashion. Sure...assumptions can be made with reasonable probability, considering the context/ situation that the character is in...but truly knowing is something else entirely. Sometimes one and the same situation (circumstantial evidence) can support a wide range of assumptions, sometimes even diametrically opposed ones.

It's just that...when we gamers really like a character, we start seeing them as more fleshed out (round character as opposed to flat character) while this may not be the case, objectively speaking.

I think that, in the end, if you really look at it...you'll find that you know the character Tali a lot less than you think you do.

I was actually having a discussion about the difference between what is known and what is interpreted with my friend the other day, I was making the same points as you.

While I am in no way attempting to say "I know all" I would like to say that I have a habit of listening to all "investigation" options, so I at least know most of what information is available in-game. I do this for all characters, not just the ones I like. I do not know how much you listen to all the dialog options, however, so I don't know how much you know about the characters.

And once again it is limited to the story written for the game, though I appreciate your insight.

Lastly, while I like the discussion, this does not have to be a Tali-specific thread. Any character can be discussed.
