I was honestly surprised by the lack of a topic on this after using the search bar.

So I just finished Limbo.

It was great.

The ending was a bit...non evenful though. So let's discuss that.

I think the girl was his sister, and as such I believe he was successful in saving his sister. This also could be an allegory to the greek myth (I forget which) of when the hero needs to travel into Hades to save the damsel, it might his mother, sister or whatever I forget which.

Also, I think the forest represents Limbo,(as in the place between heaven or hell and earth) while the city respresents Hell. I don't really have much to back that up, but that's my interpretation.

So that's my idea, what's yours?

Again, my thoughts
I think he was having a dream. The dream world is an imaginary place, and Limbo does have as one of its definitions: an imaginary place for lost or neglected things.

The whole world has a dreamlike quality. You start by being asleep, you end by waking up.

Anyway, that's what I thought.

If you look at the screen after the credits...
You see the silhouettes of two corpses lying in the grass with insects swarming around them. Those corpses are in the same locations as the main character and the girl at the end of the game. The ladder's there as well but it's rotten and broken.

Seems pretty clear to me that the two kids were dead and the game took place in some kind of messed-up afterlife. He literally was in Limbo the whole time, though it's up to your interpretation what happened at the end.

After the end, is he just going to end up looping through his journey again for all eternity? Or was that some kind of trial and now he can go to heaven?

Copypasta from the other thread:

Spoiler warning!

On the main menu, there are two things with flies buzzing around them. After finishing the game, I think that they are the bodies of the boy and his sister. They died somehow (judging by the smashing glass at the end I'd guess a car crash) and ended up in Limbo. Dante's Inferno describes Limbo as the first circle of Hell, beyond the river Acheron. In my opinion, it is that river we cross in the boat at the beginning of the game.

At the end of the game, the boy finds his sister within Limbo and walks towards her. Whether they will continue to descend further into Hell or be forgiven and ascend to Heaven (if one defines Limbo similarly to Purgatory) is open to interpretation.
