LittleBigPlanet Dev Putting Sackboy in Time Out

Media Molecule is working on something other than LittleBigPlanet for its next game.

Since being founded in 2006, Media Molecule has been all about LittleBigPlanet [http://www.amazon.com/LittleBigPlanet-Game-Year-Playstation-3/dp/B002ELCUUG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309539251&sr=8-1]. As an ace in Sony's deck, you'd think the developer would stay that way for a while. Maybe not.

According to Edge, Media Molecule studio director Siobhan Reddy recently revealed that the company is putting Sackboy in the toychest for now. At the Gamelab Conference in Barcelona, Reddy said: "We're stepping away from LittleBigPlanet to focus on some new ideas."

Unfortunately, that's the only information we have. In January, Media Molecule gave fans a whole new Sackboy adventure and took console-based user tools to the next level with LittleBigPlanet 2 [http://www.amazon.com/LittleBigPlanet-2-Playstation-3/dp/B002I0K780/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1309539251&sr=8-3]. If Reddy's comments mean anything, it might be the last we see of the little guy for a while, other than LittleBigPlanet for the PS Vita handheld which is not coming from Media Molecule.

So if Media Molecule isn't working on LittleBigPlanet 3, what could be next? My guess is either something else that puts another creative spin on a genre, or a World War II shooter. Everyone loves those.

Glad to hear it. Theres some great talent at the studio. Even though Little Big Planet is a great series I cant wait to see what else they can come up with.

LittleBigPlanet is one of those games that makes me really wish I had a PS3, so I can't wait to see what else they can come up with.

I want that game now. It would definately make war games more interesting.

As a little big planet fan I can see why they might want to work on something else. I won't say it's hit it's peak but it's in a good position to stay playable for a few years without call of duty style releases every other year to keep the brand relevant. I'd be interested in seeing what else they make though.

Now almost on par with PC user creation interfaces from 1995!

This is a good thing. I felt LBP2 came out too soon. It strikes me as a 3-4 year gap between releases would be more appropriate given its structure as a freewheeling community platform builder.

MM is by far one of my favorite developers. The creativity there is outstanding. They could probably be the only developer that could make an MMO that would rival the big boy in playground. Can't wait to see what they do.

Oh goody! I sure would love an incredibly talented studio like Media Molecule to toil away at a WW2 shooter only for nobody to play it because it doesn't belong to an existing giant of the industry brand!

MediaMolecule can do whatever they like. It'll be brilliant whatever it is. I have faith in them.

I think it's good MM aren't milking the proverbial teet of Sackboy too much. Ewww, not a good image.

Were PC user interfaces from 1995 narrated by Stephen Fry? I think we win.

In any case, This sounds like a good thing- there's enough in the LBP2 creation tools to have people coming up with innovative levels for decades, so a new IP from MM would be very welcome.

There's a really good your mama joke there but I ain't in jr high anymore.
We really don't need another lbp til next gen.
I like the idea of them doing another create style game but in the fps (WWII or other: something between UT & Borderlands) genre.
Or an interactive sandbox thing. Like what sims has become but with no boundaries.

They seemed to stop at LBP, about 30 overpriced DLC extras, LBP 2, LBP PSP, LBP GOTY. Have we had DLC for LBP 2 yet? I wouldn't be surprised. Vita LBP too. Along with tons of Sackboy merch.

While we've only had 4 actual store-bought games (only two are actually new games) they've been milking it just as much if not more than most other series.
