You saying you want to move to Britain because of the humour is a bit like me saying I'd like to go to Japan because of it's minimalist architecture, attention to precision engineering, and (hey, I won't lie) hentai. Sometimes places are better when you romanticise them a little.

And like others above me have said, British humour is schoolkids walking past you and calling you a ****. Sorry, but that's more representative of British humour than the Pythons.

One piece of advice I can give you if you want to visit (or live) in the Uk is to keep to the south as much as possible.

No more north than london, and no more south than scarbrough.

Why i say this is because most places in the north are either very rough, in poverty, or generally not very nice (such as stoke on trent, Birmingham, Manchester, and Ipswich). Near enough everywhere in the south is normally very nice, and that's where I live (Southampton). The lake district area I hear is very nice also.

OT: stay away from the south (cornwall and devon is okay, for example penzance where i used to live, if you can get a cool place near a beach)

Tell you what, lets go back to the Petty Kingdoms, then we can really get some national division going. Why just have a North/South divide, we could really foment something here...

Everywhere has good and bad areas, I'm from a very nice part of Essex, but I can vouch for a small portion of it being an absolute pit. The South isn't full of Tory snobs, just as the North isn't a giant coal mine.

In answer to the main part of the thread itself, I'd leave moving here for a little while, until a) the UK has recovered from the recession b) the government sorts itself out.

Well, if I'm going to be passing as English in Devon, I'd have to go with the West Country accent. It's one of the easier ones to fake--start talking like a pirate and calling everyone "my lover", and you're halfway there.

It's not like any where else isn't it recession, and the gov is only as incompetent as it always has been. I don't really see why waiting is going to help him.

Relocating anywhere during the recession may be detrimental. Then again, I suppose you may improve your job prospects.

Also, the Hung-Parliament seems to have doubled the level of incompetence within government.

Actually OT: as has been pointed out, there are nice places and nice people everywhere, contrasted with horribly places and horrible people everywhere.
for example i live in glasgow, recently voted most friendly city in europe (or something like that) but at the same time, im a few miles away from a place called whitecrook which has been dubbed murder capital of scotland...

My only advice is to try and avoid blackpool... It's the nearest large town to me, and it has the highest concentration of chavs of anywhere else i've been.

I moved to Nottingham for my Master Degree from Thailand and I can tell you right now that I can see myself having a family in Nottingham, sure its more expensive than where I come from but big cities are the loneliest place in the world. Nottingham is just the right size, has its share of dickheads but Thailand has them also!

I found the UK to be kinda gloomy o.o There's no sunshine 70% of the time and whilst expensive, demand for professional labour isn't that strong ... which means forget central London ... you simply won't beable to afford it because Britain seems to prefer home grown morons over intellectuals and professionals.

And of course all the British intellectuals end up going .... to Australia... seemingly enough. (3% of Victorians are expatriated Brits, many of them either with degrees gotten here or abroad)

I don't know, speaking as a person with an Australian passport all I got was latent racism in the UK ... and no I'm not talking the *nudge nudge* 'It's all a bit of fun'-type of racism that Australian-British relations tend to exhibit. No ... open racism despite being better qualified and accredited than the people making the comments.

Deeply unpleasant. Though maybe my experience was worse than the average traveler there. The Brits had better take some notes from the New World on how to treat guests because I experienced less racism in common interaction in JAPAN than I did the UK.

I live in London and lemme tell you, I love it here.

Without sounding too nationalist, IMO London is one of the best cities in the world. The lights, the mix of cultures from all around the world, the history, the people, the theatre, the comedy, the shopping. It's all great.

Also, ignore all the people saying that we are a dying country or that it's a shithole.

Well, really the UK is no better or worse than any other western nation. And just like everywhere else the vast majority of British TV/humour etc is crap, it's just that is has to be succesful before it stands a chance of making it over to the States so you only see the good stuff where you are.
If you can it's best to come over as a student because then you have a good chance of being set up with a decent social circle from the offset who'll be able to guide you around. If not make some friends on the internet and go and visit them or something because just picking an area without knowing about it and having some sort of introduction socially may well go horribly wrong.

not knowing where you come from makes comparision hard, but i liv here, and i love it. not love as in blissful ignorance, im as aware of the flaws as anyone, but love in spite of it. we have one of the best standards of living in the world, terrific people (if you make an effort to go find them and accept you will meet some dickheads) and a health service second to none.

that last reason keeps me here by the way, i have a uncle in new zealand who fell and broke a leg, he was charged $50for the ambulance ride, they couldn't afford it so he was driven there by his hysterical wife. no way, thats bad. as a comparision, my father dropped his hand on a circular saw here, and ws taken directly to hospital, and directly into th ER surgery. full recovery.

literally everyone in englnad has a story like that. and its the same for almost every other aspect of english life. we ***** and moan, but we have one of the best countries in the world, comparatively.

The Brit commonly will wear clothes suiting to his or her age group based on slightly warmer or more waterproof versions of last years American fashions. Rarely will you see a Brit in a top hat and rarer still in a monocle. Should you approach such a gentleman however, take note to compliment him on both these things.

When meeting a standard Brit, you may notice he will insult member of your family/ Your place of Origin/ How you say words/ Your sexuality/ Your personal hygiene. This is the Brit edging out of his or her personal shell of protection and isolation in order to attempt befriending. Insult them back but try not to sound to almighty and don't get excessive. Take note of recent stand up comedian insults. It is true that if you make a Brit laugh He/she will be a friend for life.

As an American it is likely the British will ride the piss out of your accent or not care. This is a system known as do you play video games? Many Brits harbour grudges from when we get outnumbered by Americans online and get the piss ripped into us. If a Brit insults your accent he is not being friendly and deserves a punch in the face. He also probably plays Halo. Some non gamers do this, but they're mostly trying to look cool. Punch them in the face too.

Finally take note, of the following:

Soccer = Football AND NEVER ANYTHING ELSE
American Football =/= Rugby
Though Brits believe American Football < Rugby up to your own personal opinion however.
Regular Football < Rugby (in most social circles)
Color = Colour
There is no such thing as baseball
No one cares about basket ball
Top gear is on on sunday and anyone who doesn't watch it isn't worth the effort talking to. Also under recent law changes they need to be arrested.

If you already have access to the tv shows, why move to the UK at all? Just watch the TV shows where you are now.

Life in the UK is in no way similar to any of the shows you mentioned. A lot of UK humour is based around taking the piss out of itself or others. (especially Monty Python)

Only place I can suggest to go is Cornwall, because it is just epic down there, only problem is it's pretty much completely out of the way of, everything, but that's why I like it.
