Yeah it's a political thread in a sense.

So I'm pretty left wing, not 100% but certainly not anywhere near moderate. However, I am often generalized by family members or coworkers or even strangers for shit I had no part of and would never support. I'm sick of being generalized or blamed for things I don't believe, wasn't alive for, and had no part of (and wouldn't have) simply because of my political persuasion.

Ex) All of you leftist commies hate the country!

Reality: No. Firstly, I am no communist. It just doesn't work for me (or anyone else who even has a rudimentary understanding of human behavior). Second, I love my country and that's why I think the way I do. I want to see it succeed. I feel my views are the best way to achieve this. Waving a flag doesn't make you a patriot, and neither do fucking stickers. I've also been called anti-American for merely stating historical facts. It's not my fault the truth hurts your delicate sensibilities.

Ex) You anti war pansies hate soldiers/the military!

Reality: Nope. I want soldiers to be paid more and I want them to have whatever they need at the front lines. I merely ask that military funding shouldn't be crippling or wasted, which it more often than not is. Remember, it comes from taxes. You don't get a pass because you're right wing. I view the Pentagon and the soldiers as two seperate entities. The soldiers are honest enough. The Pentagon/defense industry/military industrial complex now? Fuck them.

Ex) People like you used to spit on Vietnam veterans!

Reality: I've never spit on anyone, and certainly wouldn't waste my time and reputation away by spitting on people who were drafted into a job they probably didn't want in the first place. Take your crybabying to the old burnout hippies who actually DID do that, not me. I'm not even anti-war because it's a silly thing to think you'll never need to kick some ass.

Ex) You liberals are naieve, you expect others to take care of you, you're soft, you want my guns, blahblahfuckinblahinsertwhateverhere

Last time I checked I lived in a place more grounded in harsh reality than what most Americans will ever see in their comfortable homes. I don't want your money, I never even asked my parents for my money when I was younger. Soft? You mean like most of the khaki wearing business types that are right wing? Man I wish I was tough enough to do a fucking nine to five bullshit shift at an office. Fuck you. I support gun ownership too, so take that complaint somewhere else dingleberry.

Ex) You're a godless heathen with no morals!

Reality: ...Guilty as charged. :)

I'm sure this happens to right wingers too. I'm just sick of it. I understand it, but I'm fucking sick of it. In fact, I know I often get along better with and have more in common with many right wingers than I do left wingers. It doesn't mean I agree with them, but I feel more comfortable joking with them or doing the things they do than I do with some of the lefties I've met.

Have any of you ever had this same kind of thing happen to you?

As a communist, I've taken some real heat from some people. Also, that was a low hit with the remark "anyone else who even has a rudimentary understanding of human behavior". You have your opinion though, and I'm ok with that.
Communism is good in theory.

I tend not to get generalised since I don't have any really radical beliefs. Only time is as an atheist but that's really just because one of my friends (also atheist) starts talking without thinking, so sometimes I'm lumped in with him.

Well on the topic of living down things that never happened I have a doozy of a time with something I was accused of doing that never happened as the events were ficticious.
Once again as a Halo elite player I recieve a lot of insults at the best of time but the crown gem has to be when I kept on being accused of 'trying to wipe out humanity'. Now I want everyone here to remeber that the events of the Halo Story most certainly were NOT actual events but here are these guys insulting me and actually demanding I apologise for what I did. I could only stare slack jawed and honestly could not hit that damn 'Mute' button fast enough.
When people hold me responsible for catastrophes based on fictional events.... that's the crossing of the line.

...Seriously, dude?
We're fucking gamers.

Have you ever seen this thing called "the news?"
Apparently we're all baby molesting godless puppy killers, or some shit.
Don't forget car stealing and mass murdering. We don't just kill puppys, we massmurder them, while simultaniously molest hundrends of babies within our lairs that have goat heads hanging all over the place and stolen cars in every corner.

We are such horrible people and it's all because of video games.

See, here's the problem, a good portion of the people that work at the pentagon are military personnel trying to come up with the best strategies and equipment for the personnel they're in command of. If you say, "fuck the pentagon" by proxy you're saying, "fuck them, the troops deal with what they've got on their insanely limited budgets". Which by the way are quite limited, people in my command had to wait 8 months before finally getting new orders because the government didn't have the money. Yes, that's right, with a "crippling" defense budget, we've had problems transporting people where they need to go because we simply cannot afford it. All the while of course losing personnel either to war, injury, accidents, retirement, or just flat out leaving. Meanwhile, our troops out in the field simply aren't getting the best armor they can because it would simply cost too much for our budgets. I don't blame you, nor do i accuse you of believing those things are acceptable, just be careful with your words, and be aware the the military's budget really is quite small when contrasted with cost of supplying money to personnel, maintaining equipment, buying new equipment, maitaining health of service members, maitaining the health of their families, seeing that they get their benefits, and retaining and recruiting personnel. Remember, each branch of the military get's it's own budget, which is handed down by the larger defense budget, which is handed down from the pentagon. Don't blame the defense department/pentagon for it's issues, blame the people who are in control of the defense department. Since they're the ones that run the damn thing.

Your second problem, is just that, a problem. Understand that most right wingers who would attack you over the above issue really, just don't know how to articulate themselves in a manner that would allow for productive discussion. They bring up things you probrably have no experience in simply because they don't know how to otherwise argue with you. The truth is, their fanaticism is the EXACT kind that the old hippies used to have for soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, it just falls on a different end of the politcal spectrum. The idea of course is, just get frothy mouthed and angry enough and eventually people will concede to your point of view. The problem with this thinking in the modern age is that people are more and more realizing that this is simply not the way to get your point across, as we have learned from the mistakes and sins of our fathers. Or not, as the kinds of people so clearly illustrate. So keep the faith buddy, don't let anybody get you down because of what you believe. It's your right as an american to do so, to NOT do so, is well, unpatriotic.

But back on topic, yes, i've had this happen to me but it was quite the opposite. I was in a bar in Yokohama japan, and a man from goddamned sweden accused me of being a baby killer. By end of the night however, after a few drinks and some decent discussion, i found that he was a reasonable person who simply didn't have an informed view of the subject he was trying to analyze, namely me. But, we eventually were able to sort through our differences simply because he didn't subscribe to rabid, frothy mouthed politics.

That is fucking hilarious. Although it sadly gives no help to the stereotype of unbelievably stupid most Xbox Live players are, I think I would have burst out laughing if anyone had said that to me.

I don't get why people insult you for being an Elite either. When I used to play I would occasionally play as one and never got any flak from it. Although I avoided chatting to anyone but friends most of the time anyway.

Well to be fair the Xbox live community has gotten a little better since then and elites are being respected more, reasons for this escape me.
But the memory of that conversation will live in infamy:
"Apologise!"
"I didn't do anything!"
"Tell that to the people of the planet Reach!"
"THERE IS NO PLANET CALLED REACH!"
"Exactly, you assholes blew it up."
"No, I mean there never WAS a planet called Reach it was make believe!"
"Oh sure, keep justifying yourself if you must, I supoose you think that now that you are allied with us it's all okay. Nuts to that."
"Who is 'us' I am a human too I am playing as an elite. There never was an alliance because there never was a war!"
"Correction there hasn't been a war yet. I can't wait to genocide squid faces in real li-"

I can imagine what it was like at home for that kid:

*Mother walks in*
Mother: Billy, why are you shouting at that person on your computer game?
Billy: Mom! He is from an alien race!
Mother: You mean in the game?
Billy: No Mom! in real life, they blew up Reach mom and now they are going to attack Earth!
Mother: Billy, put on your coat, we are going to see a doctor...

The worst I've had was accusation of living in an igloo because I was born in Alaska.
I'm accused of that because I was born and still live in Alaska, I'm also told that I'm a borderline Russian, and people who've come to my town think that one of our bridges lead to Russia. It's kind of dumb.

To the OP: You have to remember, 90% of people in this world are sheep. They'll believe what their pundits tell them, and think what they're told to think. And to be fair, it's not like there aren't plenty of lefties who act the same way toward the most moderate of conservatives. As long as there are two opposing view points, there will be idiots out there defending their side, and attacking the others. More often then not, those same people have no real idea of the reality of either side. You just have to say "c'est la vie" and let it go.

I don't get much shit for my political or religious views, cause I don't share them with people who I don't care about. When it comes to religion, I believe in God, without belonging to a major religion, I have my own. Political views? Well, I'm not sure, but I hear good things about capitalism. Have started reading about it, and I like what I see.
