Yeah it's a political thread in a sense.
So I'm pretty left wing, not 100% but certainly not anywhere near moderate. However, I am often generalized by family members or coworkers or even strangers for shit I had no part of and would never support. I'm sick of being generalized or blamed for things I don't believe, wasn't alive for, and had no part of (and wouldn't have) simply because of my political persuasion.
Ex) All of you leftist commies hate the country!
Reality: No. Firstly, I am no communist. It just doesn't work for me (or anyone else who even has a rudimentary understanding of human behavior). Second, I love my country and that's why I think the way I do. I want to see it succeed. I feel my views are the best way to achieve this. Waving a flag doesn't make you a patriot, and neither do fucking stickers. I've also been called anti-American for merely stating historical facts. It's not my fault the truth hurts your delicate sensibilities.
Ex) You anti war pansies hate soldiers/the military!
Reality: Nope. I want soldiers to be paid more and I want them to have whatever they need at the front lines. I merely ask that military funding shouldn't be crippling or wasted, which it more often than not is. Remember, it comes from taxes. You don't get a pass because you're right wing. I view the Pentagon and the soldiers as two seperate entities. The soldiers are honest enough. The Pentagon/defense industry/military industrial complex now? Fuck them.
Ex) People like you used to spit on Vietnam veterans!
Reality: I've never spit on anyone, and certainly wouldn't waste my time and reputation away by spitting on people who were drafted into a job they probably didn't want in the first place. Take your crybabying to the old burnout hippies who actually DID do that, not me. I'm not even anti-war because it's a silly thing to think you'll never need to kick some ass.
Ex) You liberals are naieve, you expect others to take care of you, you're soft, you want my guns, blahblahfuckinblahinsertwhateverhere
Last time I checked I lived in a place more grounded in harsh reality than what most Americans will ever see in their comfortable homes. I don't want your money, I never even asked my parents for my money when I was younger. Soft? You mean like most of the khaki wearing business types that are right wing? Man I wish I was tough enough to do a fucking nine to five bullshit shift at an office. Fuck you. I support gun ownership too, so take that complaint somewhere else dingleberry.
Ex) You're a godless heathen with no morals!
Reality: ...Guilty as charged.
I'm sure this happens to right wingers too. I'm just sick of it. I understand it, but I'm fucking sick of it. In fact, I know I often get along better with and have more in common with many right wingers than I do left wingers. It doesn't mean I agree with them, but I feel more comfortable joking with them or doing the things they do than I do with some of the lefties I've met.
Have any of you ever had this same kind of thing happen to you?
