While this patch just released, there's been a leak about the next patch. It states that the new patch will be changing up the board to use both a square and hexagonal grid, and that it will be possible for bishops to spawn up to three pawns, depending on the amount of experience that bishop has and if your hand holds a Piety card per pawn.

That said, I must agree with those who think this would make Chess... more fun. Indeed it sounds like a project for some Indie developer to undertake as a weird chess based parody game.

I must admit though that I am quite disappointed the Kings were not renamed Emperors and there was no new Titan pieces added... everything is improved by the addition of giant robots with laser beams capable of wrecking cities.

There's some balance issues against the demons, but it might make the 4.5.3 patch.

This is not the only attempt I've seen to improve chess. The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon tried to split the board 3 ways along an equilateral triangle.

There's actually Chess 2 which you can find on the internet, I'm guessing it might be what inspired this because it was released for the Ouya recently.

It starts off simply enough, now they are two ways to win, even through checkmate or by getting your King to the opponents half of the board without moving into check.

..but then you have character selection. Sure you could start with the normal army, or you could choose the one where rooks can teleport to any board square they wish but can't capture a piece of be captured. Or instead of your queens you have two Kings and both have a 'whirlwind' move where they destroy every piece around them. Of the army where the pawns can move towards the enemy king whether that involves going diagonally or backwards...

Or there's the army where any queens can only move like Kings, but any two pieces adjacent to each other shares their moveset. So if a bishop and a knight were currently next to each other, the bishop could move like a knight and the knight like a bishop.
