About a month ago (edit: actually, it's exactly a month today as it turns out), my families house burned to the ground. We lost pretty much everything, including the mounds of Lego I had acquired over my lifetime. Now, I'm not necessarily looking to replace every set of Lego I had (man that would be a *****), but the insurance company needs lists of every single damn thing we owned (down to the tiniest details, like how many bars of soap and forks we had) if we want to get some of our stuff back.

Luckily we have a pretty decent policy, and most of our possessions will be replaced, replaced with something similar (of equal value), or we will get the depreciated (or appreciated, in some cases such as antiques) value of our belongings back in cash. Now, unfortunately, since a lot of my Lego sets have long since been discontinued (some are as old as approximately 2 decades ago) I am having trouble finding details on the different sets I owned. On the official site, a lot of the different themes don't even exist anymore (or I'm terrible at browsing lego.com).

Without me blabbering on unnecessarily for another 9000 lines of text, my question is essentially; does anyone know where I can find lists of retro Lego sets (preferably with VISUAL AID, as there is no way in hell I'll remember like 80% of the set names)?

Google pictures of the name of a theme if you don't recall what it looks like.

Once you have some of the Set ID (four to five digit number) then you'll be able to located either a resaler or other retail for the set, but good luck finding it unopened if it's older than 15 years.

This is the first result for Googling "6989 Mega Core Magnetizer". No need to even search its theme (M-Tron) or even that it's Lego.
Specific pieces can also be ordered in bulk by specialty websites, such as Peeron.com

Thanks for the help guys. Brickset particularly worked great for me. After browsing the site for half a dozen hours I've been able to compile a list of ~1200$ worth of Legos. Hopefully I can get a large chunk of it replaced.
