OT : Beautiful job there, and certainly not a waste of money. New Labour spent catastrophic amounts on pointless bureaucracy, at least blowing the cash on fireworks was something decent fun.
As a (reluctant) dole monkey, I'll agree that the welfare system needs sorting out, but I only get £50 a week, all benefits combined. In London. I worked for years, and that is what I'm deemed to get. I'm not ungrateful, quite the opposite, but the situation needs revising, not obliterating like the Tories will. I hated Labour, but at least they were supposed to "care" about the poor (which is questionable). The Tories just want to get rid of us, and I know that their training cuts and work sponsorship cuts have left me unemployable for at least another few months. So they aren't exactly improving matters, they're just moving the money around to look like they're saving, when they aren't. It IS ridiculous that there are parents of 10 kids who can live in mansions, but they are few and far between... There may be 3 of them, and the oh-so-truthful papers keep reporting on them, to anger the hardworking people. Most of those Nike trainers and suchlike are funded by drug dealing, mostly weed, and this is one of the reasons it should be legalised-that money could be funding our country, not just the shite sports shops
I think that the tax system is incredibly fair, it may be more than other countries, but what's wrong with putting a little back into your country? I have paid thousands in tax, and if your family are paying back in the tens of thousands, then they're earning enough to do so. Mere pennies will be going into the welfare system, so you might as well say that rubbish disposal, the police or the highway system are stealing all your money

As for the river thing, we don't always say that. There's a lot of rivers over a small island though, and various places can have the same name as the river, so it's quicker and easier to differentiate between them, by referring to the place as a river.
It was sarcasm. I'm an "extreme far lefty", which puts me at about "centre[footnote]Typing center that way feels so strange.[/footnote] left" for Britland. In the U.S. we refer to rivers as such with a simple "the". You cross
the Delaware (River), but you cross Delaware (the State). So I guess we're not so different after all.
