So for the past few weeks now at the end of the day when I'm waiting to fall asleep I feel very lonely and it's been getting me down a bit, like now.

Anyone else?

Well, you pretty much know I'm in that same place.

Though honestly it doesn't affect sleep for me, I'm up because summer has unwelcomingly come to britain and it's too damned hot to sleep.

Get a cat. Solves everything. If it doesn't, get another cat. And continue.

Edit: I should clarify that I'm serious. Don't look gor a man or woman to fill your bed - there are animals out there waiting to be adopted and pets enhance the lives of everyone who owns one. They give you a reason to come home at night, a reason to get up (and feed/walk), and someone who loves you unconditionally is always waiting for you to come home.

They also don't talk back, cheat on you, or insult your friends.

Every once in a while, yes; if I?m not in the right mood to enjoy the personal space. I know lots of people who have admitted similar feelings in the past too (usually while drunk :p), so you?re certainly not an odd-one out. It seems especially true if you?re in your early twenties, when there are usually lots of changes going on at once.

I guess getting a dog could help (assuming you like dogs enough for the extra work). Look up some local dog walkers groups for an extra social boost if that?s what you?re missing.
If dogs are a no-no, activity clubs are another decent bet. It?s definitely easier than trying to make new friends on one-off nights out.

For now, try having a radio on quietly before you go to sleep. I do that some nights if I go to bed in a bad mood and find the surrounding darkness more bleak than relaxing.

Maybe have a chat with your parents, if you?re comfortable sharing? They?ll be able to give you more personal advice than internet peeps.

Anyway, here?s something cute to cheer you up:

*sigh* Yep... when you have the scream of despair of a loved one ringing in your ears for hours on end, it's difficult to smile because you want to, because it just will not last...

Thanks chaps. I do have a hamster, but he's not very social. Maybe a bunny, though they're pretty grumpy too.

Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to make it worse... if I did. Still, rabbits aren't necessarily grumpy, just don't bother them too much. Having said that, a former colleague has no shortage of companions when she's by herself (cats, rats, rabbits & fish). (And for one reason or another, I can't help remembering the way she goes 'yum! yum! yum! yum!'... always 4x'yum' and quite musically)... -_-

Thnnks, though my problems are pretty first-world and petulant. Exams, fuel prices, lack of a social life etc. Not even considered problems to most people, I'm just having a whinge.

S'OK, all need to vent at some point... just be sure you know when to stop. Still, the exams won't last for long so that'll be one thing off your mind within the next month. A-Level or uni?

Hope you feel better now a day's passed.

No no! It's just something she does every time she's about to eat... =_=

Though captcha ('eat out') appears to be clairvoyant...

There's usually always someone around me, but I do feel lonely a lot of time. Mainly because no one ever wants to invite me out or be with me. Last friend I had over was about 2 months ago. I am seeing a friend next Sunday though so I guess I can't complain.

Get a kitty! You might get lucky and get one of those lovely affectionate cats. I have two but they're pretty independent and don't like cuddling me.

Also I suppose if you're round people a lot all day and go to bed alone, it hits you how lonely you feel. It'll change when you get a partner to go to bed with, nicking the sheets and stealing the space. Enjoy your alone sleepy time whilst you can >_<'

If you feel that you can't socialize, try Skyping with random people. It helps. Make a thread on 4chan's /soc/ board. Most of them are decent people. Make sure you don't make it on /b/. If you don't want to go on 4chan, reddit's social network. Here's a start: http://www.reddit.com/r/needafriend. Seriously, Skype helps. There are people out there who are just as lonely as you are.
