Looking for a game like Assassin's Creed, but Post-Apocalypse

Now, to clarify, I'm talking about the sandbox physics of AC. The ability to climb over just about anything, from any angle. The stealth stuff would be nice too, but I'm just curious if anyone has made any games with that basic physics/mechanics, but instead of it being historical based, it's modern day/post-apocalypse. I just find myself really interested in playing a game as a sniper, but I can crawl all over anything/everything, to find my preferred sniper spot.

Most of the modern day games that I've played that even remotely attempt this, still gate you into lanes of movement, or only being able to clamber up surfaces at specific locations, thereby limiting a lot of the map to simply background dressing, and not something you can actually interact with.

So, any titles out there like that?

It's not post-apocalyptic but I've heard the more recent Sniper Elite games are pretty open and allow for more approaches than previous entries.

Dying Light is a zombie apocalypse with free running/climbing. Not much shooting but it has the open ended movement you're looking for.

Yeah I have the Sniper games, they have the issue of seriously limiting the various surfaces you can climb in my opinion. I can't just look at a building and say "I want to be on the roof of that thing." And just climb it like AC lets you.

And I love Dying Light to death, but yeah not much sniping in that game, and close stealth kills don't really happen too much, I just use my crossbow. xD Though hopefully DL 2 will help scratch that itch a bit when it comes out. Was hoping some other titles would allow for it too.

Nier Automata does this pretty well.
Really? Because before I turned that game off due to being annoyed with the mechanics of it, all I did was arena combat fighting, and an R-Type side scrolling shooter game, as well as annoying platforming. It didn't really give me the "you can climb anything" type vibe up to the point I stopped playing.

Y'know, oddly i kinda felt the Mad Max open world game felt pseudo-assassins creed. Wide open area with towers you need to access to unfog the map, collectibles, missions, janky combat - it felt pretty AC. Or rather, i guess it felt pretty Ubisoft. Although if you did find a bandit camp, more often than not you would have to "climb it" to get all the goodies.

if we're talking just openworld freedom to climb anything you want in post apocalyptia.... i have to say, your options are pretty limited. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was set in post apocalyptia and had you clambering over all kinds of ruins and stuff but it was a completely linear game. I think the problem with making that sort of setting open world and "go anywhere, do anything " is that it could be too easy to cheese the game and it could result in running into too many invisible walls, so the genre is more restrictive.

Maybe Red Faction Guerilla? It's open world, you can wreck anything, there's a sniper rifle... Still doesn't quite fit your quota though. Hmm, i'll have a think and edit this post if i have an eureka moment

I have seen that concept attempted in FFXV's Episode Ignis DLC (very short and pretty small area tho). I'd like to see that more fleshed out in different game.

OK, it's still not the climb-from-whetever-you-like AC style.

^The Mad Max game is probably the closest to what you want. It has free running but to a much smaller degree than the AC series. Still pretty limited but as said before it takes a lot of cues from Ubisoft's design philosophy.

Maybe you could try Saboteur? That game is pretty close to AC and you have a lot of freedom in jumping around buildings most of the time. Its not post-Apocalyptic but is close to what you are asking for otherwise.

Nier automata is absolutely not that...

Horizon zero dawn is probably the closest to that, although it doesn't sound like its the post apocalypse you're looking for. Fallout 4 if you want to snipe stuff while crawling over ruin, but I doubt you never heard of it. The deus ex sorta do that if you want more modern.

Yeah I own both of those, beat Mad Max, and it was fun, but the ability to traverse the maps was highly limited. If it wasn't a yellow path, you were just SOL. I really enjoyed that game...until the end, where they just lost all the good will they'd built up with me.

Yeah I have FO4, played it a lot. And the DX series is good, but I'm looking for something else. I've played them, love them, but they are fairly limited as well, as far as pathing you can take. For example, you can't just turn left to the building next to you and say "I'm just going to scale this wall" like AC lets you do to pretty much anything.

I've also played the Dishonored series, Thief, etc. I know it's a fairly specific type I'm looking for, and I might just need to wait for CP2077 to scratch that itch. I just was curious if there had been any similar titles that had flown under the radar that might tide me over for now.

The first part is kinda like that but then you explore earth and the game opens up, which has that post-apocalyptic feel and you can do a lot more free traversal. One of the things about the game that stuck with me was how much fun they made running about.

Yeah, there's not much sniping in H:ZD, though get the right bow and skill/weapon upgrades, it can... sort of... be done? But admittedly it'll be really finicky. The stealth is... odd... too. Red grass... just... red grass... -_-

Problem with H:ZD is the free-running, which is pretty restrictive. Only where there's yellow... and there ain't that much yellow in the open world... -.- Returning to it from AC:Ody required a fair bit of adapting... >.>

Second this. Don't get me wrong, I adored Nier Automata, but the traversal options are very limited compared to Assassins Creed. You have fairly strict pathways you can follow regardless of just how climable you think something may be.

And same with HZD, where one of my frustrations were "It looks like Aloy should be able to climb this, but there isn't a yellow ledge so she can't" Considering I went from AC:Origins straight into HZD, it was very noticeable how much you couldn't climb in comparison.

If your main gripe with Sniper Elite is that it restricts your climbing too much- get The Saboteur. It's not post apocalyptic, but it's got just about the most freedom in sandbox climbing anywhere outside of Assassin's creed, is atmospheric as hell, and you better believe it has sniper rifles. And all manner of other types of guns and bombs to wreak merry hell with from the rooftops if that's your bag.

And hey, for the French, the fall of France pretty much was the apocalypse, so maybe it qualifies after all?

Man, that brings up memories. I deliberately re-started the game to get a save right before the race in the prologue... as with most things, purely for the music. -.-

Also, I went for the pure stealth load out late game 'cos sniping in The Saboteur was a bit... meh...? Getting the silenced Sten gun(?) was borderline game-breaking, but it was still a fun ride to go with the simplistic, if functional, driving, 'cos having tanks delivered on request is hilarious.

Well, when you consider the in-universe history of Assassin's Creed, every game in the series is technically post-apocalypse. :p

For me, that silenced pistol was God. I would take immense pleasure in disguising myself as a Nazi, getting right up in another Nazi's grill, and then whipping it out and blowing their unsuspecting head off with one silent shot. I'll admit I didn't use sniper rifles all that much personally, but in my case that was because I just really, really liked sneaking underneath sniper towers and dynamiting them out from underneath the snipers, and lighting up a cigarette as the sniper plummeted to their untimely death. That just Never. Ever. Got. Old.

Agreed about the Sten though. Instant easy mode. Even on the PC version the game had a quicksave/quickload feature. There was a part where you escape a nazi base you've just blown up and a high speed chase begins. You drive through this narrow brick archway and these two goons are blasting away at you standing right in the way, and it triggers a slo mo cutscene as your car launches through the arch, plowing right into them and sending them completely ragdolling away. I quicksaved just before that cutscene so I could watch it over and over again, and each time the Nazis would get flung in a different way.

10/10 would kill Nazis again.

Otherwise there's the far cry, but again you almost certainly know about that. Maybe alpha protocol, a bit of sniping and modern setting, but far from AC mobility. The hitman franchise also sorta can be done sniping (although you miss most of the point). If you've liked dishonored I cannot recommend the newer prey enough (although no real sniping to talk of there). Maybe rage 2 (haven't played it). Going older there but red faction guerrilla had some jumping around (once you get the jetpack) although if there's a wall in your way you usually blow it up rather than climb it. Maybe watchdog 2 (again haven't played it). Anybody played sunset overdrive, how was that?

Yeah I own most of those, though I personally just don't enjoy Hitman. I have zero interest in playing an emotionless hired killer, no matter how silly and wacky the maps are designed.

The others I have played, though Alpha Protocol actually bored me in the climax fight and I just stopped playing it. xD

To all the suggestions for Saboteur, thanks, I think I'll give that a try. It does seem to have that AC level of mobility, which is what I'm looking for, but just not an ancient civilization setting.

Thanks for the help.

Admittedly, it's a bit of an acquired taste for a number of reasons, but if you just think of it as being set in an alternate universe, it's fine. Since, if you're after a historically accurate game, don't play it, 'cos it'll rustle your jimmies like there's no tomorrow (the map, for one thing, the Wulf tank and zeppelins (who'da thunk it... zeppelin farming could be a thing)). Treat it as a chaos-is-a-ladder situation that has story elements/story background that strongly resemble WWII France and you'll have fun.

Hell, I avoided playing it purely on the strength of ZP's review way back when, but when I played it, I both agreed, but still found it an enjoyable ride. The aesthetic is pretty unique too, especially the final mission (or penultimate, can't quite remember).

Yeah I'm not someone who gets all anal about historical inaccuracies. I don't give a shit. If the game is fun, I'm fine. Plus I'm not really a history buff anyway, so it's hardly like I'm going to spot the differences anyway. I get that some people gain an almost sexual gratification from having an encyclopedic knowledge of historical weapons/vehicles and their schematics, weight capacities, firepower, etc, but I'm definitely not that guy.
