Looking for a good chess game

My friends have taken up chess, and they're super-competitive about it, as they are with any game. One of them especially is supersmug about everything. I cannot allow his smugness yet again. Now it's been years since I've played, and I want to brush up on my skills, which were pitiful to start with. I need some serious practice.

I own Chessmaster 8000, blowed the dust of it the other day and installed it but it's just a disaster on Win 7 and 8. It constantly crashes, even in compatibility mode.

So, I'm looking for a chess game that has as many options as CM8000, in termes of tutorials, AI settings, opponent personalities, game analysis, etc, that's compatible with current OS.

I don't know much about chess games. The only ones I know of are Battle Chess and Warhammer 40K: Regicide. Both focus on more of a visual flair to chess than comprehensive options, though both contain a range of AI difficulties and options. Probably not to the extent you want, however.

I too am after a cheap chess game with a good range of AI. I'm not really after one with lots fancy pants animations or themes or anything.
