Looking for a good hack and slash

Although I'm big into RPGs, I have only played a handful of the hack and slash variety. I only recall playing Diablo, Diablo 2, Sacred 2, and Champions of Norrath. I'm looking for a good one to play.

I was considering getting Torchlight on XBLA but have heard mixed things about it. Also, can Deathspank be placed in the hack and slash category? If so I might get into that one. Is there any better ones that you can recommend? (has to be a console title as I don't own a gameable comp).

GOD OF WAR if you have a ps2/3. Darksiders was another good hack and slash wit some puzzles and is worth playing once.

Drakengard. It's made by Square, so it's got some RPG elements. Also, you can ride on a dragon and rain down armageddon upon enemy soldiers. The story is depressing, yet is one of the most impressive narratives that I've ever seen in a game.

Also, Blood Will Tell has a good story. Guy lost his body parts as a baby, now has prosthetic limbs (including swords attached to the inside of his forearms) and he has to recover his original body parts. The gameplay is standard for a hack and slash, but I still find it to be quite enjoyable.

Both are available on the PS2.

I have played all those. What I really meant is the type of hack and slash with the top down view, gaining exp from killing stuff, looting, and that sort of thing. Basically something similar to Diablo.

Torchlight, on PC if you have the option however. Not only is the game great, there is an active modding scene adding classes and a variety of other stuff.

Edit : Bleh, just noticed the PC problem.. what do you mean by "gameable"? It's not exactly hardware intensive.

If you're on the fence about Torchlight I'll say get it now. If you enjoyed the Diablo games you'll enjoy Torchlight. I've played it on the PC though, don't know how well the controls transfer over from that.

Nobody makes top down hack n' slashes anymore, but for games in this genre i would reccomend theres Devil May Cry 3 and 4, both available on Steam.

I cant really reccomend God of War, as i havent played it.

The Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games for the PS2 are fun. They're not 'proper' BG games, but there's some nice hacky-slashy action in them.

Also Maken Shao for the PS2 (or Maken X for the Dreamcast, but the NA release has a horrible, horrible localization). Despite the wonky controls I had a lot of fun with it. Some really surreal designs by Kazuma Kaneko and Shoji Meguro music makes the game worth it.

..though I suppose Demon's Souls has hack and slash tendencies as well. If you haven't played that game, play that game before any of these. Hell, play that game before anything in this thread. It's amazing.

EDIT: Wait, top-down? Go with Dark Alliance instead, then.

Torchlight gets boring quick for me. A little too shallow. You may like Titan Quest and it's expansion. Much more interesting, although the campaign does feel quite drawn out in places. Lots of cool settings as well. It's available on Steam, so you should look at some reviews to see if it is for you.

Hack and slash? You should try Dragon Age II. *rimshot* [http://instantrimshot.com/]

On a more serious note, I've greatly enjoyed Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 for PC in the past. It's very much like Diablo.

Xbox 360 doesn't offer much as far as old fashion top-down style ARPGs. Pretty much the only ones I can think of and recommend are: Sacred 2 Fallen Angel, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, maybe Dungeon Siege 3 (don't know haven't played it yet), and Deathspank and Torchlight from the marketplace. Also original Xbox games: Hunter: The Reckoning, and Bard's Tale. Borderlands is also fun if you want to try a FPS Diablo like game.

GOG.com has a few good PC options that don't require a gaming computer, many can be played on a netbook. Some I've enjoyed are: Sacred Gold, Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, and Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader.

ah yes, big lipped mind controlling swords are quite uncommon today

still, beating the shit out of ninjas and russian circus mutant assassins with a commercial plane pilot using a stun stick is something to be experienced

Bayonetta. It's an awesome hack and slash, with amazing graphics, simple gameplay, loveable characters and an incredibly sexy protagonist. What more could you want?
