Well it's that time of year when I've been given the difficult task of picking a Christmas present for myself.

Current Specs

- AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 GHz
- Sapphire HD 5770 1GB GDDR
- 8GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM
- Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I really just need a new GPU, but I'm entirely unsure which direction I need to be heading in. Do I stay AMD or move to Nvidia? My current 5770 tackles Tribes: Ascend and Skyrim pretty well while still keeping it good looking, but I'd really like to kick it up with some tasty texture mods and stuff. I'm also hoping for Far Cry 3 around the January period. So hit me with your recommendations.

Whilst I realise I could Google for benchmarks and tests, I'd really like some first hand advice. Budget isn't exactly irrelevant, anything up to £200 will do.

RESOLVED! Thanks Hazy for recommending the 7870!

What about this?

The 7870's one of the best cards out there right now for price/performance. Can't recommend it enough.

Plus the Twin Frozr III's factory overclocked for a little extra power.

According to this the 7870 is a good idea that will allow him/her to stay AMD

They liked the GTX 660 if s/he wanted to make a switch.

The 7870 is a bit more powerful than the 660, but the 660 is cheaper and uses less power. Either is a good choice really.

I've already settled on this thanks to your wonderful self and some confirmation from a few other forums, the 7870 will definitely meet my present and future needs. You are a saint, many thanks, my regards *salute* /sincerity
