Hello as the title says I'm looking for a program that will capture game play in mp4 format, I have used fraps in the past but the file sizes it creates are ridiculous. I have heard of free mp4 streaming software that will also allow you to record game play in mp4 but I can't remember what its called.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Are you recording from a PC or a console? Debut Video Recorder might work for you if it's PC, but you have to get Debut "Professional" to record in MP4. Of course there are ways to get it aside from buying, but I'm not going there.

Recording from a pc, the one I looked at was free (why cant i remember the name >.< ) but I couldn't use the program on my old pc as vistas 'whatever' wasn't compatible with it and despite updating and running Microsoft 'fixit' (the ones with the little man and his tool bag) programs I couldn't get it to work so I gave up.

Got a new pc about a week ago though so it should work.

Open Broadcaster Software [https://obsproject.com/] sounds like what you were talking about. It allows streaming and local recording. You could also try out MSI Afterburner [http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm], which also has a system monitor for checking temps and speeds. It only records in raw or MJPEG formats, though, so you'll have to convert afterward if you want an mp4. Both are free to use.
