If you want a generic FPS, there's a free shooter on the Computer called Alliance of Valiant Arms (AVA).
It's an okay game operating off the standard "earn in game currency or buy better currency", like League of Legends, which you can spend on guns and other miscellaneous things.
It's okay, and it does have a good tank-escort mode, and a CS-esque bomb plant mode.
It has a wide array of guns, as I was able to get a Tavor Tar-21. I like that gun.

Call of Juarez - Gunslinger. Simple, fun, good. The way of storytelling made me chuckle a few times so far.
Most important, in comparison to contemporary MMSs: you actually get to play, not only watch it.
There's a demo on Steam, try it.

If you can track down the first two Soldier of Fortune games, I'd highly recommend them despite their age. By appearance, they're modern military shooters, but they're more "gamey" than the current batch. More about the fun factor than trying to be cinematic or realistic. Also, they go totally over the top with gore effects.

Can't say that everybody enjoys it, but I had a helluva time with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. No, it's not as hardcore as the older ones, but I feel the multiplayer strikes a great balance between strategy and arcadey-style action. Not sure if too many people play anymore, but if there's over 1000 on their servers still I'd totally go for it. Plus there's gun-porn. GUN. PORN.

Bioshock (all of them, though I'm just gonna say I enjoyed Infinite the most by a lot), great gameplay, great story, great everything.

GR:FS does require quite a lot of teamwork in multiplayer since you alone can barely complete the objectives, the characters takes so much time capturing the point that by the time you are halfway the capture you are already surrounded by enemy players. You really need your team to cover you while you capture the point.

Its a very tactical game if everyone is playing it right, of course that if everyone decides to be a sniper and camp for the entirety of the match then tactics just go out the window but most of the time people play nice.

Or you could just play an FPS that isn't a load of mediocre shite.

Like Painkiller or Quake or DOOM. Hell if you want something modern just play Bulletstorm or Serious Sam 3. But if it needs to be a MMS just get ARMA 2.

Pretty much, word for word, what I was about to say.
I recently loaded up Quake and DOOM, and they still totally hold up.
Even their limited visuals are strangely appealing in their own way.

Oh, some technical issues aside, ARMA is a good game. I just object to the notion that meticulously translating actions of the human body which in reality do not even deserve the word "intuitive" to the pressing of dozens of buttons comes anywhere near realism.

If you're looking for, "Realistic" Modern Military shooters, then first and foremost, I suggest Call of Duty. CoD gets hate mainly because its formula gets copied to death, not so much because its formula is BAD. It's a very intuitive, streamlined series of set pieces designed to invoke exactly the kind of aesthetic these kinds of games are going for, and if you don't go into it with you Games-Are-Art Beret on (A piece of headgear I myself don nearly constantly, mind you), then you can have a pretty damn good time blowing up all the guys. The first Modern Warfare probably holds up the best.

Note: I didn't say CoD was realistic. I said it was, "Realistic". It goes for a realism aesthetic: it's just a fantasy version of real. It's not realistic in the sense of accurately portraying combat, but it IS the shallow escapist fantasy version of modern war. And though you didn't say this, someone is thinking it, so I must also point out that there is nothing wrong with that. I'd say that that aesthetic is the thing tying all these MMS games together.

Also, I would mention CoD games before ARMA because the OP was talking about a MMS game as a sort of mindless palate cleanser between denser fare. In service of that, I don't think ARMA fills the role very well.
