Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell 1+2 have to have seen those. Once in Subs and the other in Dubs. Best dubs ever made.

Not that you asked for it, but Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann! It's one of the most awesome anime's there is.


Bit more like what you asked for would be Ergo Proxy, an awesome anime that kinda slipped under the radar.

Ergo Proxy is probably my favourite anime, but don't think it really fits "gory, horror, supernatural, Mystery, or romance/comedy" in any way shape or form.

Ergo Proxy's problem is that it came out in 2006
EVERY anime of 2006 (well, that I've seen, and I've seen quite a lot) was excellent. Ergo Proxy appeals to a fairly limited audience as it is, so being drowned out in the legendary 2006 didn't help it...

A fellow PROXY lover eh? Also I'd say it kinda fits... I mean, what would you call the PROXYS and the whole conspiracy stuff? I'd say it's a bit supernatural at the very least... :3

Also, I wonder when we're gonna get AutoReivs of our own..? That would be awesome, don't you think? :3

Please keep in mind OP, that anime of the last few years has taken a severe dip in quality, because like with all things, most people have shithouse taste.
So when you are thoroughly disappointed by many of the suggestions in this thread, do not be disheartened, keep going! Keep wading through the rivers of modern shit until you reach that shining star that makes it all worth it! Of each year there is at least one...

Akira is a must watch, one of the best features ever made. Ninja scroll is extremeley enjoyable, with the required amount of gore (some supre dupa headbutts at the end) ghost in the shell can be slow at times but i adore them, the two movies (innocence really surprised me at how good it was, despite the major only having a small part, but the individual eleven and laughing man were top notch. wicked city was mentioned but thats a bit wierd.
first manga i ever watched was the old street fighter, nice scraps, worth a watch.
ichi the killer was held in high stead, but i much prefer the live action movie from takeshi miike (wasnt it?) so give that a go, and while your at it watch OLDBOY, ITS A MASTERPIECE!
watch it now, dont think about it, just watch it. well off you go then!

How about the anime movie Paprika?
Definitaly and odd, great movie.

Paranoia Agent is a good supernatural/kind of a horror anime.

Perfect Blue is suppose to be a good, bloody, mystery anime movie, I've yet to see it though.

You might also like, Cromartie High School, Sola, Demonbane.
Cromarite is a comedy and I'm not entirely sure about Sola or Demonbane though.

After reading what you wanted to get from an anime, i really wanted to suggest Higurashi...but you've already watched that.
So, basically, I'm clueless.
But i might as well suggest you what i suggest to every single person: Tengen Topppa Gurren Lagann (unless i missed it on your list). And Great Teacher Onizuka. Both are so awesomely awesomeish. They don't really fit into the lines what you want, but screw that, i loved those two from the bottom of my heart!!!!!

While you are at it, Samurai Champloo. Both are very interesting series, entertaining in their own right, but beyond that, they are serious attempts to create art out of the medium. Not in the same way as Evangelion, but they are very artistic in terms of their theme and overall arc.

If you liked Code Geass, then you'll like Death Note. It's got a lot of the same 'villain as protagonist' narrative, but it uses a more washed palette. Excellent use of composition.

This is an oldy but a goody. It's not a series, but damn if it isn't awesome in its own right: Otaku no Video. It's a HIGHLY hyperbolic and embellished tale of some nerds joining to form a geekmedia empire so one of them can become king of Otaku... the Otaking. It's also the story of the forming of Gainax, which is one of the most important companies in the field of animation in Japan. It's also a look into the mind of the creator of Evangelion before he got very sad and depressed.

Also... Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's very popular, it's being remade, but it's worth seeing. Don't see it in a marathon tho. It's... yeah.

If you must watch Akira, do not watch the dub dome by Streamline Pictures. I'm lenient when it comes to localizations, and not really on a side in the sub v. dub debate, but the most central plot point that explains all the wtfery was not included in the Streamline dub... yet was clear enough in the sub that watching the sub -made the movie make sense- when before it was just 'some japanese animated wtfery with awesome production values'. The animation in it IS top notch tho, Toei knows how to do it right.

And Gurren Lagaan. Yes. All I can say about it is... yes it's campy, yes it's cheesy, yes it's over the top. But once it goes over the top it goes 'LOOK A NEW TOP' and it then does what it can to go over that top. It takes 'Taking it to the next level' to the next level.

I also believe EVERYONE needs to watch Interstella 5555 at least once in their life. You remember those Daft Punk videos that were anime features? Well, in reality, that entire album was the entire soundtrack to the movie Interstella 5555, and the videos were just the parts of that movie those songs were playing in. No dialog, no sound other than the music, but it -works.- And for those oldschool fans: It's done by the people who did the original Macross.
