I have just recently purchased a laptop and with this I'm getting in to pc exclusive games. I have yet to play an MMO and I'm wondering if anyone can give recommendations. Currently I'm looking at Guild Wars 2 (have a friend who is into it), would this be a good first MMO?

Say no more: Guild Wars 2.

Seriously, that game looks amazing, I'm counting the days to the first beta event this weekend. I've already pre-purchased it and I can't wait for it to come out.

I'd check out the open beta this Friday. You need to pre-purchase (or get lucky) to get in, but your friend should let you take a look, and they'll be lots of information coming out over the weekend. It's a bit different from other MMOs in how the combat works, but that's no reason not to make it a "first". There's no subscription which is a massive bonus.

OTOH, will your laptop be able to run it?

It's your best bet at the moment. Getting in on the ground floor of a new MMO is always the best plan, and you've got a few months yet to go before it's even released.

There's another to consider - Salem - also just entering beta phase. This ones a little unique, more focused around crafting than actual battle - PvP or otherwise.

You can find more here: http://www.paradoxplaza.com/games/salem

If anyone's interested in this, let me know - I'll send you an invite to the beta.

I would suggest being careful about pre-release hype. I have yet to find a game that has lived up to the excitement generated before it came out. By all means, go for GW2 if it interests you, but don't go in expecting a 'WoW-killer'.

I would agree with getting in on the ground floor as well though. There is always more resources allocated for developing MMOs during the first year or so it exists.

How would he be expecting a WoW-Killer?

He's never even played WoW. The term "WoW Killer" would have absolutely no meaning at all for him.

Even someone who has never played MMOs should at least have background knowledge that WoW dominates that genre.

That said I probably should've used different phrasing.

Sure, but they wouldn't know why. For example, I know from word of mouth that a lot of people like Zelda. I've never played any of them, or even seen them played, but I know they're popular. If someone released a "Zelda Killer", that would mean absolutely nothing to me. I could play it, and have no idea whatsoever in which ways it was meant to be killing Zelda.

The nice thing about everyone's first MMO is it tends to have a big impact on them. They remember it really fondly, and tend to look back at it with rose colored glasses. That's part of WoW's lasting appeal. For many, it was their first introduction to the genre, as it was the game that lowered the barrier to entry.

lol WoW Killer.

Well I could write for England on this topic, but I'll just jot down the general gist of my thoughts. I don't think WoW was a particularly exceptional game on release, in that there were several other MMOs around the same time that were of a similar quality (and since then I'd say there have been several superior titles). There was an element of luck in WoW becomming the dominant player in the market. And it wasn't intended either; Blizzard wanted a place in the market, sure, but it wasn't a realistic goal (or probably even considered possible at the time) for one game to be so successful.

Since then, with Blizzard being Blizzard, they have added a lot of polish that cements the game as quite a solid title, and the amount of content available is obviously far beyond what any new game could ever be released with. But more than that, its place as the market leader is what makes it unbeatable. MMOs are about community, and the fact that WoW has the most players reinforces its position against any competition. In effect, I don't think it's actually possible for a new game to be a WoW Killer while WoW holds such a dominating position. WoW will die out eventually (and it could be many years yet) of its own accord, of course, but it won't be another game that does it. I don't think even a WoW2 or WoS would stop people playing WoW.

On the other hand, the big factor of Guild Wars 2 is that it doesn't have a subscription. Don't push that aside for a single moment; that is huge. When you're considering two subscription MMOs (say WoW and SW:TOR) then for the most part you play one or the other. Most people won't pay two subscriptions at once. But many WoW players will still play Guild Wars 2. That's a very significant factor.

No, Guild Wars 2 will not kill WoW. It should hopefully develop a niche group of players and have a good set of content to play through, but it won't be competing in the same market. There is no way that Guild Wars 2 will ever be as successful as WoW. In fact, I don't think there will ever again be a game as successful as WoW. One thing that is slowly dying for sure is subscription gaming. If Guild Wars 2 is a success then I doubt many future MMOs will be made with a subscription model.

Mildly relevant aside: Jeremy. Soule. Fucking hell, what a god.

I'd give Rusty Hearts a go. It's free to play, available on Steam and plays more like an online hack and slash game rather than your standard MMO. Voice acting is beyond piss poor but there's only certain sections that have the voices anyway.

It's totally worth a look-see!

Well, if you've never played one before, you could always start up a free wow account and play to level 20 just to get a feel for what the "standard" MMO feels like.

solve (totally not captcha): old hat
...appropriate.

Try Lord of the Rings Online.
I played that back when it wasn't free to play yet, it was my first MMO and I have fond memories of it. It isn't really the same since it went F2P, but it's worth a shot.

Hmm, that looks interesting - permadeath + open PvP = <3
Wouldn't mind a beta invite if you still have one.

On-topic: Waiting for Guild Wars 2 is probably your best bet OP, since getting in on an MMO when it starts is usually best, although GW2 looks like it will play somewhat differently from normal MMOs. You could also try WoW but that seems to be sinking slowly now (please don't blitz me with "omg your so wrong quotes", I haven't played since WOTLK and I'm just going on impressions). I would leave KOTOR alone unless you really love Star Wars, from what I played it really felt like a single player game with tacked on MMO stuff.
