so i'm about to start working night shifts, and during night shift they allow you to listen to your mp3 player, ipod, whatever. now i used to have an 80gb ipod classic, but its pretty fucked now (if you knock it it thinks the headphones have fallen out so it pauses the music. this happens pretty frequently) and my only other way of listening to music is using my phone as an mp3 player, but i'm not allowed phones on me.

so any recommendations for a decent mp3 player? i want it to have a screen, but i don't need it for anything other than music (no video, pictures etc). i also have a LOT of music, so ideally i'd like one with some form of external storage like an SD card.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I owned 3 different Sony Walkman MP3 players and they all served me very, very well.

There are probably other worthwhile ones out there too, but Walkman are worth checking out.
I've had 2 walkmans (An old A series that I used about 5-6 years ago) and one of the 32GB X Series, great machines, very reliable.

I'm currently using a 120GB iPod and it's great too. Why not just get another ipod?
i shall have a look into the walkmans, ty ^^

and i'm not a huge fan of apple, i really hate using itunes, and they're pretty damn expensive. i'd still consider it, but i'd just prefer not to go with another apple product.

An iPod is really the last mp3 player with huge storage capabilities.
i'm not looking for huge, just around 30gb will do, which is why i'm interested in ones with an external sd card slot

An iPod nano will probably suit your needs. Has a small screen (not touch) and they don't usually come in huge storages. Mine is like 8 gigs or so. You can go up to 16 gigs I believe

Prior to the boom of Mp3's, I used a walkman CD player, and it was very high quality machine. So, a walkman would be a good suggestion.

Obviously iPods are good, but I personally dislike the software.

Personally, I use Zune, and Id never use anything else now. They arent quite popular, but they are awesome. Check em out, shop around. You might find it to be in your price range.

One more vote for Walkmans. I own an S-series about three years old now. The sound quality kicks ass, and the included headphones were great too- well until they broke :( I don't know how you feel about touchscreens, but unfortunately if you want anything above 8gb you move into touchscreen territory. In my opinion, that's fine on a phone, but for a music player I like to be able to feel for the buttons in my pocket.

This might be a little more high end than you're looking for, but I'd recommend the Cowon J3. It's Micro-SD expandable, and has some of the best sound quality of any MP3 player on the market. Of course, that's a moot point if you aren't using high quality (aka expensive) headphones or high quality files, but I thought I'd mention it.

OK, now I am going to open my weird love here. Archos. Great reliable mp3 players with a decent UI, support for a lot of different codec types, my personal favourite Archos 2 got a micro SD card slot in case you want more storage. There's no required software needed unless you want to convert videos (on a 2 inch screen I don't see a need to transfer movies anyway).

My mp3 player is a $30 peice of crap. I got it because I knew it could utilise my 32GB MicroSD card. and it runs...so yeah. It's been serving me faithfully for 4 years now.

Don't be taken in by the size of the internal memory. Instead, you should get a cheap one with very little memory, but an expandable SD or microSD slot. Mine is 8Gb internal but I've boosted that up to 30Gb, which would be fine for your needs, and is also a lot smaller & cheaper than an ipod.
