so for some reason I'm thinking of giving Fallout 3 the old re-install, and this time around I figure it might be worth trying out some mods

to be completely honest I [i/]really[/i] kind of don't know how mods work, but I'll try and remedy that with some googling

I'm not interested in drastic changes to the game or screwing around. I'm more looking for mods that "enhance" the existing experience, animations and such.. I've already found a few

http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/10/13/10-essential-fallout-3-mods/

that seem like that I'm looking for, so I guess what I'm asking is if anyone knows any other essential mods or mods that do these things better..and weather or not they are compatible to run at the same time

also did they ever have a mod to remove that annoying *zoom in and lock eyes* thing?

If you want mods that don't mess with the formula of the game too much but still make it better..

Fellout - enhanced weather and lighting (removes the awful green atmospheric tint as well)

Weapon Mods Kits - Modded weapons (pretty much where the New Vegas weapon mod idea came from)

NMC's Texture Pack - increased resolution textures based on real world images (I believe the max pack has 4096x4096 res textures, so they really make a difference).

EVE Energy Visuals - must have if you use energy weapons, new animations, weapons and projectiles, very messy and very fun.

Ultimate Perk Pack - adds tons of new perks, more variety is always nice.

Fallout Street Lights - adds lights and FX particles to street lights (must have if you use Fellout, looks awesome)

Apocalypse Armory - ever thought Fallout 3 doesn't have enough weapons, this is the cure, some weapons are a little unbalanced though, so you may want to push the difficulty up to Very Hard when using this one.

Anyway, those are some good starters, also FOMM, AI and FOSE are musts. you can get all of these mods from http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/ and FOSE from http://fose.silverlock.org/

Enjoy.

EDIT: Also, if you're worried about conflicting mods, check out 'BOSS' its a program that automatically optimizes the load order for your mods to make life easier for you. Works for Oblivion, Skyrim and New Vegas too.

I endorse Weapon Mod Kits a lot. Adds a goal to your favorite weapon after finding it, beside occasionally repairing it. A Combat Shotgun with an auto-fire mechanism can do as much damage as a Mini-Nuke

RH_Ironsights, personally, to get rid of the aiming system, more in favor of New Vegas's

Fellout, really small but really noticeable graphics mod

Personally, I hate all of the weapon mods. It's annoying to have an atmosphere of 1950's styled world, using olde time wood furnished guns, and the game tosses in a bunch of Berettas and Colt assault rifles. As if that isn't annoying enough, you have all sorts of new ammo types - 40mm grenades, 9mm, 50BMG, 40 calibre, .22 rimfire, .410, 20 gauge, 357, etc. I highly suggest getting the optional files in RH_Ironsights, they keep with the lore of olde time weapons, while keeping to the same ammo types.

Basically what you want to do is extract the RAR file (right click, you'll see when I mean), then grab all the innards of the folder, which depends on what the mod is, and copy paste it all into your fallout 3 directory.. usually Program files -> Bethesda -> Fallout 3 and then put them in the 'Data' folder (or wherever the README specifies, but usually the data folder).

Then open up your installed FOMM and tick the necessary .esp and .esm files, and launch the game. When in doubt, read the README, they almost always have detailed instructions. Sorry, not the best at explaining this kinda stuff, its pretty much second nature to me, so its hard to tell how much people know or don't know, but always refer back to the README if you get stuck.
