Some good books that I have read recently are the Night angel trilogy if you like fantasy.
If you can find them the Animorphs book series is also quite good, although I haven't seen any of the books in years.

Founding Faith is an in-depth analysis of the U.S.'s Founding Fathers and their religious views and ideology, and how that transferred into the fight for religious freedom.
The Gulag Archipelago is a very detailed overview of the gulags in Soviet Russia, very informative and heartfelt in its style.

I'd personally suggest The Birthday of the World by Ursula K. LeGuin for a good few hundred pages of science fiction on the same level as Clarke, Asimov, et al, a collection of the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, though if you have never read his stuff before you absolutely MUST find a collection with "The Call of Cthulhu" in it (his best-known piece), though if you can find one with CoC + The Color out of Space + The Shadow over Innsmouth, you're set. Can't think of a third book right now.
George RR Martins song of ice and fire series is pretty amazing. Its a medieval fantasy setting but its so different from the usual sword and sorcery stuff. Politics, intrigue and brutality are all major elements of the series.
In non-fiction I recommens Faye Shulmans 'A Partisans memoir'. It really gives a different perspective on WWII and the holocaust, not exactly light reading but still pretty damn interesting.
For politics you can't go wrong with Machiavellis 'The Prince'. Depending on your interpretation, he can either be a monster or a realist.

I would recommend the Song of Ice and Fire series (by George R.R. Martin) if you're into fantasy. Dies the Fire and its sequels by S.M. Stirling are all good sci-fi/apocalyptia books. The Drizzt books by R.A. Salvatore are also good, and very easy to read. Also, the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind is decent, but very slow to start and rather long. All of those books combined should get you through the summer.
I would recommend anything by Jim Butcher. He's a Fantasy / Sci-Fi author. His books are well written, interesting and funny all at the same time =)
The halo book series is actually quite good and informative in my opinion. after the first three i kind of got busy with other things in life, like a job. but occassionaly i revisit them.
Oh yeah, 1984 and most anything else by George Orwell too. Especially the stuff about his own experiences.
Lord of the Rings *****.
no seriously, i hate reading books when i'm forced to, and now i'm doing this speed reading class and the book we're using is Lord of the rings. i think the reason i like it is not only is it awesome, but because i have the movie, i know what's going to happen next in a way, so i know the book won't drull on and on without knowing when something good will happen. now all i can think about is LOTR, i've been drawing LOTR fantasy type stuff and listening to Rhaspody of fire nonstop.
just find a really good book that got a really good movie deal, except harry potter and twilight, harry potter is old and twilight is gay as homosexual shit patatoes. try patriot games and the hunt for red october by tom clancy, forrest gump (maybe too slow), blade runner, rambo: first blood (very moving, one of the best in the franchise), Die Hard *****, etc.

this web site agree's with my theory, LOTR: the return of the king is the best god damn movie...EVER. i've watched that movie so many times, i love it. i love it just a little bit more than i love the first two movies.

Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse 5 are amazing. It's hard to go wrong with Kurt Vonnegut but I suggest starting with those two.
Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo is my absolute favorite book. One by Metallica was based off of it.
A Canticle For Leibowitz is a pretty awesome post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel.
Oh, and Franz Kafka is the shit. The Trial and Metamorphosis should definitely be looked into.

The Dark Tower books by Stephen King Make an execlent read espically if your familiar with any of his other works but my other all time faviorte book Is House Of the Scriopion it's an execlent read if you can find it.
Hmm, I'm quite sure nothing I would recommend would be in your local book store, but it can easily be found online. For a book type novel I simply recommend "John Dies At The End" by David Wong. It is not an ordinary book, it's hilarious in my opinion. It was free to read online. I read it, then ordered a copy. Second part is online for free on the website. It's a weird book, but if you want something different it's the right choice.
For a non-novel books, I recommend any of Malcolm Caldwell's books. They are written on interesting matters, that you probably never thought off. Here's a link of his speech on Ted:

I agree with most of these, though I enjoyed Ender's Shadow more then I did Ender's Game. The Hunger Games is another good one. I'd add A Game Of Thrones by George R.R Martin and The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss as well.Verex said:
