With a little luck I'll be getting a new laptop come fall. I'm not looking for anything specific yet but was hoping you guys could give me some general recommendations as to which manufacturers to look for and which to avoid.
I'll be using the laptop for both work and gaming purposes and it would be nice if it could last at least 3 to five years at least (not graphics wise, I don't mind playing on low graphics settings) It'll probably have to be below a 1k $ price tag.
I was thinking about either getting an Asus or Toshiba or perhaps a Dell.

Asus, MSI and Compaq are all worth looking and although I don't know where you can by from where you live, here [http://www.laptopfactoryoutlet.com.au/laptopsunder500-1000.htm] are some good suggestions of what to get.

Personally, steer clear of DELL for their shitty drivers.

ASUS and Toshiba are a good brand as well as MSI, if you can afford them look into Sony VAIO also.

I always think that if you're looking to do both work and play then a Toshiba Qosmio is probably the best thing to aim at. If you're more inclined to gaming then an MSI, and if you want to go all out gaming then Asus G series.

I've got the MSi gx740 (with i7 rather then i5) and it works beautifully for anything I want to do. It's got a few problems with crashing though, which is why I would think the Toshiba is safer for work, because you don't want to lose everything you're working on.

The Toshiba Qosmio looks very nice indeed, a bit expensive for my budget but nice.
