Hey guys, after playing Dwarf fortress i was wondering if there are any free Sci-fi games out there? Im looking for something that has RPG elements like picking a ship and a crew and flying off into a sandbox like Sid Miers Pirates or that old Cloud Nebula game.

If you're looking for freeware games, I'd suggest looking over at Abandonia Reloaded. [http://www.reloaded.org/]

If you haven't played The Ur-Quan Masters, then I'd suggest you go play it right now. Hell, even if you have played it; go and play it again... And again... AND AGAIN!

It's an extremely hilarious RPG set in space.

Edit: The map is HUGE.

Strange Adventures in Infinite Space is free now.

There is the Ur-Quan Masters project which is a free version of Star Control 2.

There are a few more obscure projects with this theme but I'll need to refresh my memory of them.

It's not an RPG (like, at all), but Beneath a Steel Sky has been released as freeware. It's an adventure game from the '90s, and it's awesome.

Transcendence might be the sort of thing you are looking for. Personally, I didn't get into it but it has it's followers.

There is Oolite for an Elite type game.

Space Rangers 2 is a commercial game that you should look at.

beneath a steel sky, its pretty old (it says "quit to dos" at the menu) and even back in its days it was graphically behind, but its funny and have quite the story going, its set in future Australia and you can get it at GOG.com
