A while back I made a topic about wanting to get into MOBA's and wanting advice between whether I should try DotA or LoL first. Well a friend at my new job has been trying to get me to play LoL with him so I finally downloaded it and will be trying it out this weekend. As such I'm looking for some general advice that you'd give a newbie since, from what I hear, the community for LoL is...less than forgiving in regards to mistakes.

Oh, and I guess this is the current champion rotation:
http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Free_champion_rotation

Any advice on which of those characters is a good starter? And which character I should look to "buy" once I've earned enough credits or what-have-you?

But yeah, just looking for general advice and strategies so I hopefully won't get yelled at by too many disgruntled Russians. >.>

Or is that more something to worry about in DotA? :p

With LoL you're much more likely dealing with Spanish speakers. Mostly in the forms of Mordekaiser and Tyrndamere.

Alright, you got lucky. You have some rather easy champs for each role. Ashe is a good starting ADC (bottom lane). Riven is a decent top and mid. Taric is a great starting support (bottom lane). Lastly you have Warwick and Evelynn as Junglers. What people consider easiest depends on whom you talk to. I think support and top is the easy, while my friends have a tough time. Play some games with each role and see which one clicks. Then save up your IP or maybe even buy some RP to purchase some more champions. Eventually you'll find "the one" or maybe "the two" champions you'll destroy as. I found mine in Braum, Blitzcrank, and Thresh.

A general tip is to also be decent at using two roles. If your first role gets called you need a backup. If you ever need someone to play with, just add me. I'm on usually once a week, my name should be the same as the my one here.

Don't worry, League is Russian free. I've played on EU West for two years and not a single Russian has appeared before me. People will still yell at you but it will be in a language you can understand.

I always operated by play whoever you think looks interesting, probably worth buying all the 450 IP people first because there's a decent amount of them, they're easy to learn mechanically and they cover every type of character while being cheap as hell.

Ryze is your standard very low cooldowns, button mashing mage, Annie is your boom, boom, BOOM instakill mage (yay! Tibbers!) you get Ashe to learn basic ranged AD mechanics though she's low tier in the current meta and has been for a while now because she has no mobility in a game where everyone has a fucking gap close or a stun or a speed buff or some such nonsense (though definitely don't worry about tier lists when first starting, I just wish she was more viable.) Alistar is your very straightforward tank press R > walk into entire enemy team GG and so on.

I don't really know how to tell people what to do when they start, you have to learn it by yourself for the most part i've tried coaching even in game...

"Don't overextend ok?"

"ok"

*dies*

"Why is the death icon right on top of the enemy tower?"

"Oh was I supposed to not do that?"

Of those available, I'd suggest Ashe or Taric

Ashe because she is a decent entry level ADC that you can grow in proficiency with as you get better. I'd say Cait is the easiest ADC champ if you can get her though.

Taric because he is a tanky support with no skillshots so should be easy enough to learn the ropes with.

I'd suggest first of all finding your preferred gameplay style after a few games, do you like to tank, sup, carry, jungle or top or mid? Then find a champ that corresponds to your preference.

After that we can give you some champ specific advice.

I wouldn't recommend Ali to a nooby as he is all about cc and fucking up your headbutt can save your enemy and make your tms curse you whilst missing with your q makes you pretty much useless due to how big a cd it is. And if you're gonna pop your R, don't waste it in that manner ffs, it'll run out by the time you reach your enemy aswell as tip them off very clearly to your intentions, pop the R when you're actually being attacked (ideally by the entire enemy team) otherwise you're just squandering it.

Alright fine, let me clarify. Walk into entire enemy team > Press R > win game. Details, details.

The headbutt/knockup combo ain't even hard and I don't really like using it anyway. It feels like to me when you have such a great displacement tool, using it as a sole gapcloser is a terrible waste and if I wanted a ranged dash/stun combo I would have picked Leona. I like the walk in/knock squishy into tower lol rekt kind of thing.

I suppose another cheap support would be Nunu who is even better for new people. That's another one who walks in and presses R, well kind of. You can use it better as a huge zone of safety for your AD, the damage is significant but not exactly the point when their assassins and bruisers can't navigate the huge slow to get to the back line.

Fair warning, the LoL community can be brutal. Put your hardhat on, because it's a monkey house, and your best is not going to be good enough if you're not dominating the lane/game. Even if you are, it's still not good enough for some, fi you picked "the wrong champ", or someone who is considered underpowered in the meta. A word you'll hear a lot, which players love to push in front of them like some bad excuse is "the meta", and people go nuts over it. Basically it's based on what kind of champs go well/bad with the team comp (a valid point), what other players think about the champ, or the kind of people who choose that particular champ (a less valid point), and those that will hate you for having the atrocious idea of wanting to try a champ you're not good with (a very much invalid point).

It really brings out the worst in people, and if this is the kind of thing that gets to you, then either thread carefully, or just don't play it. It also helps if you don't acknowledge the haters, if you try to fight back, you've already lost. And trust me when I say, it can at times be hard to fight the urge to come up with some snide remark. That said, if you're more patient than me, you should be fine.

Don't be immediately discouraged from playing LoL, though, it is for the most part fun and challenging. Playing it with some friends is a huge plus, you can even learn a thing or two, as they can see things you didn't see, and vice versa. Keep in mind that there is A LOT to learn in the game.

Lastly, if you decide to play some PvP-games on low account level (around 1-5), you'll encounter a lot of smurf accounts, people who know the game very well and knows how to play it. I'm letting you know because it's the kind of players who will punish you for mistakes you didn't know you even made, and might make it seem like you're absolutely terrible at the game. The important part to remember then is that you're not bad, you're just new at the game, and they're not. As for why they are doing this? Not sure, I guess they're just evil.

Awww, so I can't just pick the one that looks cool? :p

Well I hope Ashe is considered alright, because that's who I'm going with so far and I'm digging her. I'm not entirely new to the MOBA scene, I played DotA back when it was just a really fun custom map on Warcraft III. :p

Yeah, the guy I work with told me about the smurfs. I'd imagine they do it because they reached their plateau in the ladder (or whatever) and realize they're not as good as they thought they were so they go try to beat up on real newbies to make themselves feel better.

But yeah, I intend to just ignore everyone in the game unless they're offering genuine advice.

In the beginning it might not be frowned upon, it's not expected of you to know each character intimately from the start. I fell for Garen in the beginning, because he yells "DEMACIA!!!!!!!!!!!", it was fun to shout "DEMACIA!!!!!!!!!!!", and he spun around like a christmas tree mounted on a saw blade. He has no place in the game as the situation is right now, though, unless you're a god like this guy. He's pretty much my hero right now, but the interesting part is how much abuse he gets in the chat simply for his choice of champion, even if he's damn good at him.

Experience from DotA is sure to help. Your assumption of smurfs sounds very much like my thoughts about them. Being able to shut out the crybabies is guaranteed to make it a better experience.
