Well, I'm bored and have nothing to do at the moment, so I need some grand ideas on what I should play. I've checked most online list, and most of them play out to Final Fantasy VII being their top favorite among the rest of the predictable and cliche list.

What I'm particularly interested in is a decent role-playing game of any sort, JRPG or not(Although I'm a little distasteful when it comes to JRPGS). It must have a decent amount of exploration for that feel of freedom, engaging plot, good character development, and some customization. I'm not looking for anything from the Final Fantasy series, mind you. Also, let's try to keep it off the console, if possible. I'm not looking for anything from this current generation or age either.

This seems a little demanding, so I'll probably settle for anything that falls slightly below this category. Here's a list of honorable mentions that I've already experience...

- Legend of Dragoon
- Chrono Cross
- Chrono Trigger
- Most Final Fantasy Titles
- Most Castlevania Titles
- Fallout Series
- Elder Scrolls Series
- Xenosaga

Anything preferably for the Playstation and below is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I highly highly suggest Rouge Galaxy for the PS2. I know you said you would prefer if we kept it off of the consoles, but I think this game is waaay underrated and is a great RPG. The story is wonderful (and made me tear up several times), the combat is live-action and very engaging, it has a unique way of upgrading your characters, and has an extended ending that, to me, was pretty unexpected. I'm also a sucker for cell-shaded graphics, so that was a plus too.

If you haven't played Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall yet, do that.

Also, if you have a Dreamcast, Grandia 2. Best combat system of any JRPG.
