Alas, a few days ago I had to say goodbye to a trusted friend. My reliable Nokia 3310 has served me well for a dozen years, but now it seems that while it was near indestructible, it was not immortal. Farewell buddy, you will be missed.

Getting to the point now. With the demise of my old stalwart Nokia in mind, I finally caved and got myself a smartphone. Found a cheap deal and am now the proud owner a Samsung Galaxy S3. Got all the apps I need, but there is still one void that needs filled.

Games.

Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about what is out there, so I'm calling on my fellow Escapists to help a layman out in picking out some choice games for on the go. Anything goes, except for sports games (not my thing).

Well, it really depends on what you're looking for, but since you haven't really specified anything, I'll just throw a bunch of different choices at you.

If you're going for the more casual side, there are of course the likes of Angry Birds, Wordfeud, Cut the Rope, Temple Run and the like. All fun and free(the latter has a paid version as well), and all of them don't really take a whole lot of time.

Then there are of course popular ports, like:
· Freeciv, which is a scaled down version of Ciilization. It's not all that great on a phone though, but it's still there.
· Ur-Quan Masters, a port of the old Star Control 2 game. I haven't played it enough to give a fair judgment of the game, but again, it's there if you're interested.
· Nethack, the dungeon crawler, ported straight to your phone. Turn-based, unforgiving and difficult as hell, in all its glory.

Next there are all sorts of different emulators, the category I've been spending most of my gaming time on my phone with. I have and use the following:
· FPSe, a PS1 emulator(my most used), on which I play all the classic JRPGs, I've missed, since I didn't play any of them as a kid. I've done Chrono Trigger and I'm currently playing through Xenogears and have the Final Fantasy games lined up.
· GameBoid, a GBA emulator. Primarily for Pokemon games, so far.
· SuperGNES, a SNES emulator. Haven't used it too much yet, but there are some great games for the SNES, so it shoud be very nice to have.
· ScummVM, for the classic adventure games of old. So far, I've played Simon the Sorcerer one on there and have the 2nd one lined up, whenever I fancy playing it.

Also, there are a bunch of other emulators that I haven't checked out, like the Atari-2600 one, the Sega Saturn one, the Sega Genesis one and so on.

Lastly, I can't really recommend it as such, since I haven't played it myself, but there's a game called Squids, which supposedly is a mix between RPG and action strategy. I've heard nothing bu good things about it, though, so I urge you to check it out, which I'll also do myself at some point.

Anyway, there you have it, some different options, I hope it's of some help to you.

Angry Birds, it's a fun, free physics puzzler that's also a worldwide phenomenon, probably worth giving it a go.

Shadowgun, 6 Guns, Football Manager, and FIFA 12 would be my first recommendations. There's also Max Payne and GTA 3 for full on ports.

Other high quality stuff which I haven't tried yet - Modern Combat series, NOVA, Galaxy on fire, Star Battalion, Dead Space, Battlefield Bad Company, Need for speed, Mass Effect Infiltrator.

Having said that, I don't think any of it is in any way superior to a traditional gaming experience. Proper core titles dont translate very well to playing on a small screen on the move, and more mobile focused games are like going back to the days of the Amiga.

Alright for train or plane journeys though.

Of course, all those are for android, but you didn't specify so I kinda assumed.

Some good suggestions so far. A nice eclectic mixture, just the way I like it.

I'm staying far away from Nethack though. I can't take the amount of rage it brings up in me anymore.
