Some good old, Final Fantasy style RPGs. Not like the newer ones where its more real time combat-ish, but more like 6-8, the turn based style. Graphics isn't really a big issue to me if the story and game play are good. Prefer them more fantasy based, as I spent enough time using guns and explosives overseas to last me a lifetime, I don't need any more in my entertainment. I'm kinda checking in to Grotesque Tactics: Evil Heroes, and it looks fun and cutesy, but I'm not sure if its exactly what I'm looking for.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Sincerely,
Olde Timey Gamer

P.S. If anyone has any "in" connections with GoG.com, tell them a remake of Day of the Tentacle, or Wizardy 6 would be stellar!

FFX, awesome graphics for it's time, great stories and sub plots, good upgrading system, quite a long game, turn based combat.

One of my favorite games of all time!

The combat does need some work though, like 99% of the status ailment spells are useless.

It is on PS2 though, but I have no idea what systems you have.

While i dunno f it's FFish, Baldurs gate 1 and 2 can be played both in pseydo realtime and turnbased, since it's based on D&D rules.
I haven't played them myself, but the icewind dale games look like their more or less more baldurs gate as well.

They're all old, and teh graphics are old as well, but they're cheap as dirt if youcan find them, and i still consider Bg2 one of the best games i've ever played.

"blue dragon" is a strait up turn based RPG, and "Resonance of Fate" is good If you can master the complex combat, but not really what your after I think.

Since you didn't mention systems I'm just throwing this out there:Dragon Quest 4(DS) or 8(PS2), it doesn't get more old school than this:Medieval fantasy setting with turn based combat and enjoyable characters. DQ4's story is fairly basic but enjoyable while DQ8 has a few twists that liven it up.

EarthBound(SNES) has a similar battle system to DQ but is a quirky game in a more modern setting.

Persona 3FES/4(PS2) are awesome as well. Plays like a darker version of Pokemon with various mythical beasts and religious deities instead of little fuzzy animals. Also the stories are amazing.

I would prefer PC or PS3. Some of the ones I've been a huge fan of over the years were Grandia 1 and 2, Legend of Dragoon, FF 6 and 8, etc.

Old school RPGs? Now, the big divide is Western or Japanese?

Western: pick up the Fallouts, Elder Scrolls, and all the old Black Isle stuff (Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, their expansions, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, and PlaneScape: Torment). PlaneScape: Torment was one of the most plot-crazy games ever made; it's more or less an interactive visual novel outside the specific action sequences. And of course, the later Ultima games might be worth it.

However, your previous favorites strongly suggest JRPGs. I'm not a huge fan, but Suikoden and Fire Emblem series are pretty well-received and the fan base strong even today.

Art style, plot, character archetypes, etc, aside, I've always thought the biggest divide between JRPG and WRPG was choices. WRPGs usually let the players make a lot of decisions which affect the outcome directly, resolving branching subplots. JRPGs tend to focus more on the spectacle where the player doesn't have much say in how events play out. At best, they can decide to do or not do a particular subquest, but rarely can you do a subquest and really decide how to resolve its conflict.

It all depends on what you like.

GOLDEN SUN!
GOLDEN FREAKING SUN!

Both GS 1 and 2 were amazing JRPGs on the GBA.

I loved GS 2 more, but both are really good.

A reto Turn Based Strategy style that somehow stays fun thought the game, amazing graphics for a GBA game, a plethora of skill and ability customization(The freaking Summons are AWESOME), a great story and good characters, it will last you a while.
And if you play them in order, transferring you save data from the first game to the second one via Link or password will pay off BIG TIME.

You could download Costume Quest for your PS3 - it was inspired by games like Earthbound and Dragon Quest. The combat is turn-based, but also has quick-time like parts when it's not actually your turn to keep it interesting.

I'm probably going to dl it to my Xbox tomorrow - I can let you know more about it then if you like.

I played both GS 1 and 2 over in Iraq. Some days it was the only thing that kept me sane. If they put it on the PC or PS3, I'd buy 20 copies.

I'll take a look at fire emblem since it seems to be a big fav here. Anyone have anything to say about Grotesque Tactics?

If they would release it as a Double Game Cartage for the DS or at least Downloads for the DSi-ware id be ecstatic.
And Fire Emblem is another great game and one of my favorites.

I cant say anything about Grotesque Tactics though.
Iv never even heard of it man.
