I've been interested in learning German for quite a while now, I feel I'd like to expand my horizons.

I've been eyeing up some books on German, mostly travel companions and phrasebooks, but I was wondering if there are more in-depth materials anyone is familiar with. Does anyone here speak German as a second language? Or a first even? And does anyone recommend any books or materials in particular?

From what I hear the Rosetta Stone program is supposed to be good for learning a language but that could just be the advertisement propaganda getting to me.

It depends on how much you're willing to invest in this pursuit.

You could enroll in a language course (possibly at a community college, depending on where you live), or simply pick up the Rosetta Stone programs. Both are very effective, and very expensive (unless you've got money to burn).

Otherwise, pick up an English/German dictionary, just to get your feet wet. You could also Google German language courses, or something like that to find online lessons. I found a Creole course done thru Skype that way.

Good luck, pal.
