Losing my Gamer's Spirit

I got burned out on games a few years ago and didn't really play much for a long time. When I picked it up again I was able to get back into it, but I can't tolerate bad/boring ones like I used to. Maybe just take a break for a while?

This. Back when I played games like a mad man, most of my library was made up of slightly older and bad (Cheap, money was an issue) games. Over the past two years I've just lost a lot of my enthusiasm. I've found that I'm just not willing to put up with bad or medicore games anymore.

That's why I'm about to buy a moderately new game for the first time in months (Dead Rising 2).

I find myself not able to stick with games anymore.

I get pretty bored easy, I don't like it.

I've been calling myself a "gamer" since the mid-ninties back when starcraft movies were epic technology and the only fps people really knew about was Doom.

Yet, these days, I just can't lose myself in games the way I used to - whether new ones or old classics.

Anyone else ever get burned out like this? Think I should just try a new genre of games?

I feel exactly the same way too. I want to game but I don't really like doing so as much. Part of it for me is that I don't really have anyone to play with. Also, I want to go out and do something meaningful like getting a job.

Edit: Trying new genres sometimes help, I like to mix it up and play a little of everything.

Writing and gaming usually switch off for me. But if you keep a wide range of games on the go it's harder to get tired of gaming. Often I'll get burned out on gaming if all I'm playing is a cornucopia of FPS's or JRPG's.

Everyone's gonna tell you to take a break or switch genres or whatever, but there really is a chance that video games just haven't gone anywhere special in the last 5+ years.

I haven't found a multiplayer FPS that rivals Unreal Tournament. I haven't played an RPG that even approaches the storytelling of Planescape: Torment. Starcraft 2 is Starcraft 1 with polygons, and WoW is basically the exact same game I played years ago. I haven't been floored by graphics since Gears of War 1. I haven't been awed by a gameworld since Oblivion.

Honestly, I'm in the same spot as the OP. I've taken the breaks, switched up the platforms/genres, all that. Bottomline: I don't think any of the big-name devs are doing anything we haven't seen a dozen times already. I could turn to the indie scene, and I have had some positive experiences there, but it's just not the same, is it?

My fav game from this console generation? Demon's Souls. It's horribly imbalanced with mediocre graphics and one of the worst difficulty curves I've ever seen. But it sure was fucking DIFFERENT, wasn't it?

Edit: all that said, I do think Portal 2 has the potential to be something special.

I go through phases of either playing one game constantly, or many games, switching very quickly. It basically works with what do I want to do right now? I must have gone through a hundred Morrowind phases since I got it. Even my most favorite game I need a break from. (though sometimes I just rather play Oblivion for awhile...or Dynasty Warriors)
